Late last summer, Matt Boettcher was diagnosed with cancer in his mouth and lymph nodes. He underwent extensive surgery and radiation and for a few months appeared to be in the clear. However, his last scan revealed this was not the case.  As Matt’s wife Sarah wrote on February 4:
For those of you who don't know, Matthew had a recurrence in his cancer. It has spread through his entire throat and into his lungs, in just a few short months after radiation he has been diagnosed as stage 4. He starts very aggressive chemotherapy, targeted and immunotherapy today. I love him so much, and would trade places with him in a heartbeat but I know that he wouldn't let me even if it were possible. It would mean so much to us if you could think of him, say a prayer, or ask the universe to please be kind to him.

Matt’s needs are constantly changing and his is the primary supporter of their family, which include Sarah, his wife,  three beautiful children and niece and nephew.

Matt recently received a feeding tube and can only have one particular kind of boost.

The goal of this gofundme account is to help help ease the financial stress of this situation.

However you can help this family, it is very much appreciated.

God Bless

Hello everyone. I wanted to give a not so quick update on Matthew and his treatment. Before I do I want to continue to express our gratitude to every one of you. No matter how big or small you may have thought your donation, gift, kind words, to us they have been huge! I will never have the words to truly express how grateful we are for all of you.
Matthew had a PET scan last Friday after completing his six rounds of chemotherapy and targeted immunotherapy, and we were given the results yesterday. I am saddened to announce that it showed quite a bit of progression of the disease in his neck and the tumors have grown significantly. Although this is devastating news it doesn't come as an absolute shock. The Oncologist had warned us months ago that having more pain was a sign things were probably getting worse not better, and Matthew had been experiencing a significant amount of pain in the weeks leading up to his scan. I am relieved that we will now be moving on to Matthews last, and only treatment option. Yesterday he started a new(ish) immunotherapy drug called Opdivo. The Oncologist had pushed for this treatment back when the radiation didn't work, but the insurance company denied it. So here we are, almost a year after his initial diagnoses, 2 months of daily radiation, six rounds of intense chemotherapy and all of its terrible side affects, with no results other than more cancer. Yes, I'm frustrated and bitter about the insurance but it probably isn't relevant right now. Even after all of that my beautiful, amazing, awesome husband has stayed strong and been an absolute champ! It is often his strength and positive attitude that carries me through this! Matthew started his first Opdivo treatment yesterday, and the Oncologist assured us that this treatment can have amazing results if he responds to it, and has encouraged us to remain positive. He will begin by getting the treatment bi weekly then every four weeks, and if it does it's job he will receive the treatment for several years.
I also wanted to update on Matthews employment situation. Last month he was let go from his job after applying for long term disability. The social worker at the hospital warned us with only a 30% chance of returning to work this would probably happen. Even though we understand his employer needs someone there to perform the tasks needed, it still sucks and has made a difficult financial situation go from bad to worse. The good news is Matthew was almost immediately approved for SSDI, but he won't start receiving it until October.
Thank you everyone who's read this far, and I will try and continue to update. I really, really hope with all of my heart that the next update is a positive one and that he is responding well to his new treatment! I'm sorry if this is word salad, I'm easily sidetracked, especially when emotions are involved! Thank you again, everyone! We are so grateful!
XOXO Sarah, Matthew, Colin, Kailey, Cherry, Hurley, and Penelope XOXO

Over the last few days I’ve been checking in with Sarah to see how everything is going and she said it was ok if I shared an update.

First and foremost, thank you! Thank you to anyone who has helped, continues to help or will help in the future, in all things! Between the boost, monetary donations, gift cards, even helping with the kids or snow removal, in all ways, Sarah was so incredibly amazed at the love and support of friends, family, church, school and even strangers.

Now for an update on Matt...very positive news, there were no new growths seen on the CT scan of the lungs. The tumors even appear to be getting smaller!
The tumors in his mouth and neck are a little more difficult. In these tumors, there appears to be necrotic tissue-necrosis is the death of cells in living tissue. Anyway, these tumors appear larger, and the Dr feels this is due to the necrotic tissue. The future scans (within the next month) will confirm.
The doctor assures that is this the most aggressive and effective treatment plan for this particular type of cancer!
That said, Matt will be able to supplement some soft foods back into his diet while also having primary nourishment from the feeding tube.
As I close out this update, I ask that you continue to keep Matt, Sarah and the kids in your prayers. This is a long journey for the whole family.
