24-Year-Old Rape Survivor Launches GoFundMe Campaign to Help Pass Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights
Today, GoFundMe announced the launch of a campaign for the Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights organized by Amanda Nguyen, a 24-year-old rape survivor and founder of Rise, a national civil rights nonprofit. The campaign aims to raise $450,000 to secure the passage of federal legislation that will provide basic, common sense rights to sexual assault survivors in all 50 states.
This money will help raise awareness with key stakeholders and lawmakers by funding survivors to travel across the nation to meet face to face with their members of Congress and statehouse representatives. In addition, this money will fund full time staff to continue the round-the-clock work needed to win in all 50 states.
Rise founder and GoFundMe campaign organizer Amanda Nguyen has made it her life’s mission to strengthen the rights of survivors of sexual assault across the country. Nguyen experienced the injustices and difficulties facing survivors in the state of Massachusetts.
“Every six months, I have to save my rape kit from the trash. My story is not mine alone. There are an estimated 25 million sexual assault survivors in the U.S. Rise is fighting to protect their civil rights — including making sure they are notified of their rights, saving their evidence, guaranteeing they don’t have to pay for their rape kits and ensuring their voices are heard. This GoFundMe campaign is critical for us to take this fight across the nation’s 50 states and to bring survivors to meet their lawmakers face to face,” said Nguyen.
In addition to drafting the Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights, Rise ensured the bill’s unanimous passage in the U.S. Senate. Now the bill must pass the U.S. House, and this campaign will raise the funds necessary to advocate for this reform.
