SEND BLP TO PHI/NYC

Assalamu Alaikum (peace be unto you),

Several members of the Black Liberation Project, are fundraising to go on two trips this Summer. The first is an organizing and team-building trip to the Black Muslim Psychology Conference in Philadelphia at the end of July and the second is a healing/retreat to New York City at the end of August. These trips would function as healing and to connect with groups nationally to figure out how to sustain movements and prevent burnout. BLP is an organization of Black Mus
lims working for racial justice through a faith-based framework. We would benefit immensely from going to a conference centered on the intersections of Blackness, Islam, psychology, social justice and mental health. About ½ of the money raised would go towards the trip to Philadelphia (airfare, hotel accommodations, travel/food and conference registration fees for 3 organizers). The other ½ of the money raised would go towards a self-care healing retreat to NYC as well as the chance to connect and build with Black Muslim organizers in New York. So much of our works depends on expanding the movement past local issues and connecting with like-minded individuals and organizations around the country to amplify our campaigns, and this trip would allow us to do that much more effectively.

BLP has been at the center of the movement in the Twin Cities for over two years and our members have taken numerous arrests and assaults by the police during that time. On top of our movement related trauma, we also shoulder the everyday trauma that comes with poverty, Islamophobia, racism, misogynoir etc etc. We’ve been working nonstop since we formed as a group two years ago and are in much need of a break so we can regroup and move into the fall re-energized, focused and ready to continue working.
