Blankets for Baby Rhinos
We are a wildlife conservation craft group. We make crochet and knitted blankets for a variety of orphaned baby wildlife animals including but not limited to rhinos, elephants, chimpanzees, baboons, vervet monkeys. We also make crochet and knitted toys that act as a surrogate mother to our primate babies. We do not forget the carers, rangers and anti-poaching men and women who risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of our wildlife. Besides blankets, we make beanies, balaclavas, scarves and gloves to keep them warm during the freezing winter months. And lastly, there are a number of impoverished communities in a rhino reserve that we also provide for, ensuring that the young children in the crèches in the reserve benefit from what we do.
However, we have become a victim of our own success. We have received far more beautiful blankets and other crafted items from all over the world than we ever expected... and we continue to receive more and more every day.
The biggest problem we now face is transport. We have relied heavily on members who have ties to airlines however, this is no longer sustainable. We currently have 45kg of blankets that were couriered from Dubai (at huge personal expense), awaiting onward shipping.
Each week we are approached by international conservation groups that we would dearly like to us to help them. It is however, proving impossible for us to assist them because we do not have courier/transport funding.
While the majority of donations received will go directly towards moving blankets to wildlife reserves and orphanages where they are sorely needed, sometimes we may have a request from our supported sanctuaries for milk formula for orphaned baby animals, food pellets for the bigger animals, medicines, medical supplies or equipment for APUs.
