Black Panther Youth Matinee

Donation protected

#BlackPantherChallenge for Oakland, California and Atlanta, Georgia.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, space for larger auditoriums were already booked when we checked 3 weeks ago and as such we've identified roughly 230 youth that we were not able to support during our February 19th screening in Oakland, California. The majority of these youth are coming with parents and are not listed with existing STEM organizations. While a dedicated screening is not possible at this time, we are looking to purchase individual tickets for them and their parents February 20th and during the subsequent weekend February 24th and 25th. We will still provide these youth with information regarding STEM resources including coursera, EDx, Khanacademy, Udacity, CodeAcademy and Pluralsight as well as upcoming programming initiatives from our partner organizations.

Cost are as indicated below:

230 x $7 matinee ticket = $1600

x $5 for concessions = $1150

adjustment added to total | $2750

The basics

All proceeds go to the following expenses required for a FREE youth private screening, refreshments, and STEAM packs for each child in attendance, so they can continue their journey in tech. One youth screening is scheduled for Oakland, California and another youth screening in Atlanta, Georgia. Each screening will be followed with a panel featuring peers and special guest speakers engaged in arts, tech from each local community.

An anonymous donor has pledged $5,000, so we're estimating approximately $9000 in remaining cost.

Each youth will receive a "STEAM pack", and prize winners will receive an arts or tech pack:

The inspiration

Over half a century in the making,  'Black Panther' is analogous to some what 'Star Wars' meant to so many nearly 40 years ago. 'Black Panther' presents an opportunity to expose many youth, black youth in particular, the power of afrofuturism driven narratives in our current technological age. To that end, we are fundraising for a FREE screening for youth in the Bay Area and Atlanta metro area and then connecting youth with STEM organizations. We are partnering with Qeyno Labs, Black Girls Code, Hidden Genius Project,  and Goodie Nation for youth to become involved in their programming and upcoming hackathons. Each screening will accomodate 200 youth. Given the ongoing conversations around diversity in tech, this film presents an opportunity to foster connections between youth, leading STEM organizations, technology - and ultimately how they see their own futures taking shape. Our goal is to not only provide a memorable viewing experience, but also provide youth with the tools to engage with STEM opportunities in their communities.  Your generosity is much appreciated, please join us as we take a moment to create something positively influential for youth in these two communities during a once in a lifetime event!
