The Forever Foxy Campaign

£150 of £500 goal

Raised by 10 people in 16 months
We have set up this GoFundMe In memory of Dottie, a much loved silver fox and girlfriend of escape artist Wilf, a local celebrity in Sale, who sadly lost her life after an underlying and insidious worm infection caused complications with her recovery from the surgery necessary to prevent her from escaping and breeding.

Black Foxes UK
is raising funds through the Forever Foxy Campaign to assist in the neutering, recapture and re-homing of silver foxes in need. Reducing the risk of escape, Injury and death whilst preventing the potential for inbreeding, exotic pet overpopulation and hybridisation with native wild foxes.

What Are Silver Foxes?

The silver fox is another name for the farmed North American red fox. It is a subspecies of the red fox that has been intensively and selectively bred by the fur trade for over a century. The process has resulted in over 80 different colour variations, most of which could not naturally occur in wild populations.

The farming of silver foxes began in the UK in the early 1900's and came to an end at the turn of the millennium, when fur farming was banned. Despite the ban, the sale and import of fur is still permitted in the UK and people continue to breed silver foxes to this day. However, instead of becoming pelts, they are now kept as exotic pets and educational ambassadors.

Why Is This Campaign Necessary?

* to control inbreeding and pet overpopulation
* to prevent the need for rescue and re-homing
* to reduce the burden on animal welfare charities
* to prevent and reduce the risk of escapes
* to control the potential for silver fox naturalisation
* to control the potential for hybridisation
* to generate interest in local wildlife and ecology
* to raise awareness of fur farming ethics and welfare
* to raise awareness of exotic pet management
* to protect animal welfare and save lives!

How Will This Campaign Help?

The Silver fox is a domesticated non-native subspecies but many are not aware of it's existence, let alone it's place as a commercial product within our society or as an exotic pet within our homes.

At Black Foxes UK  we think this needs to change and that is where your donations come in!

The funds raised will go directly towards:

* Equipment and costs for education/fundraising events
* Costs of neutering silver foxes in need
* Costs of fostering and re-homing silver foxes in need
* Equipment and costs to recapture lost exotic pets

Dottie's PM and pathology reports are now back from the vets. I know it was difficult for her owners to overcome their anxiety with the vets given the situation, but it is a credit to both Dottie and her friends they did.

The results reveal that Dottie had an underlying and insidious worm burden that caused complications with her recovery from her spay as a result. These parasites are silent killers, the vets nor her owners could have predicted or prevented her early death under the circumstances. It does mean that now we are aware, Wilf and his canine pals can be protected.

At Black Foxes UK, we recommend pet owners ensure their pets are regularly treated to prevent both #lungworm and #heartworm - especially in pets that travel, (as well as for the more visible and commonly seen worm species like tapeworm and roundworm).

Speak to your vet if you are concerned about worms, especially lungworm or heartworm, as not all wormers treat the same parasites, and not all wormers are safe for all species.
