 SEATTLE, WA
The Black & Tan Hall began last spring, as a dream born among a small group of visionaries in the Hillman City neighborhood of Seattle. Their dream involved music, delicious cuisine, and a place where all members of our diverse and vibrant community could be explicitly welcome to share their voice and passions. Ben Hunter, Tarik Abdullah, and Rodney Herold knew that they wanted to create a space that challenged the current way we run business.

As more of us signed on to help with the development of the business, we were drawn to the idea of creating a community-run business that is diversity-forward, that fosters consensus and idea-sharing, and that reflects the many cultures and energies that make up our community. We are excited about building a for-profit company whose central focus is people rather than profits. Our dream is to create a space that defines success in terms of how well we listen to and respond to the passions and needs of the South Seattle community and beyond, and - amazingly - we are realizing it.

The Black & Tan Hall is a worker-owned LLC Partnership, such that all partners are also investors of their time and money in the company. We have been financed entirely by the contribution - monetary and otherwise - of the partners who have signed on to invest in the business and see it through to successful completion. Via a unique ownership model, our partners are financing and building the company by investing our own funds and doing all of the work -- from the flooring to the painting to the city permitting to the cooking to the serving.

Thus far, through hundreds of hours of time spent by the partners, we have nearly finished remodeling the space - a long and energy-intensive process of gutting the old space and refurbishing it from the inside out and top to bottom. We have pulled up rotted carpet, refurbishd the walls, built new furniture, improved the stage, laid flooring, painted, sanded, stained, cleaned, and otherwise created the beautiful new hall -- one whose aesthetic uniquely represents the hearts and minds of various creative individuals. We have hired an electrician, a plumber, and a sign-maker for the facade; everything else was done and financed by us.

We are nearly done improving the space and have been working hard to set up our business infrastructure, as we are so incredibly excited be open as soon as permits are in place. In place of a traditional top-down ownership structure, we are committed to a unique community-driven formation in which ideas come from the community and our circle of partners listen to and coalesce around positive, sound, and well-thought-out plans and ideas. We cannot wait to open and share our dream with the public.

This is where you come in. We are looking for seed money to finalize the remodel, finish stocking the restaurant and bar, and continue to pay rent before we have a revenue stream as an open business. As noted above, we are financing this entirely on our own. We are not looking to banks or seeking loans; this is a space made for the community and built on community funds.

A final push for capital will allow us to see this through. Your contribution will allow us to:

- Stock the kitchen with food and essential supplies
- Purchase beer, wine, and accoutrements for the bar
- Finalize the build-out of the kitchen and bar
- Construct a beautiful sign to hang out front and paint the building’s facade
- Reupholster our booths, which we are recycling from the previous occupants
- Procure and display artwork from local artists
- Assemble the sound system and make improvements on the stage
- …. And SO much more to allow us to open with a fully functional, aesthetically pleasing, safe space that will serve the community for many years to come.

Please consider contributing to help us attain seed money for this business. Below are the various levels at which you can contribute. Remember that along with the perks listed, you will get to be a part of an organization that is community-driven, people-based, and imbued with compassion, humanity, wisdom, and fun. In today’s age, that means a lot. We are grateful for any contribution, so do choose the level that is right for you.

Also, please note that any contributions made through the GoFundMe campaign will be a no-strings-attached contribution - a one-time donation for which we are deeply grateful. If you would like to support us as a monthly subscriber or as an partner, or if you would like to know about the Black & Tan and the different ways to be involved, please see the “Join us” page on our website.

Thank you!
