My grandfather, Bill Hanson, has volunteered with the Canaan Protective Fire Company for well over 50 years, serving as assistant chief and Chief for nearly 30 of those years. Those who know him know he’s stubborn and doesn’t like asking for help, so we’re asking for him. He is self employed and hasn’t been able to work since February due to cancer-related side effects.
In February of this year, my grandfather was admitted to the hospital for weakness and inability to walk that set in with seemingly no explanation. After various tests, MRI’s, and doctor visits, he was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma called Central Nervous System lymphoma.
He began his first round of chemotherapy at Dana-Farber in March, and completed his second round in July.
At his most recent appointment, we learned that the brain tumor has grown substantially and is inoperable because of the location. He was given 6-12 months to live. His doctor, Dr. Nayak, prescribed him a very potent form of chemotherapy in an attempt to slow the progression of symptoms as he is now going blind and deaf on his right side from the brain tumor. This chemotherapy isn’t to put him into remission. It’s to simply extend his life so we can enjoy him, and he can finish out the things he wants to do. He still has that Bill Hanson fighting spirit that we all know and love. Dr. Nayak is remaining optimistic that this pill could benefit him.
While the insurance company will cover the costly expense of the chemotherapy to begin, the copay is $3,000 per refill and he has to have two refills. He has to begin this chemotherapy ASAP as his symptoms are progressing rapidly.
Any donation is deeply appreciated. All donations will go directly to helping pay for the cost of the chemo pill, and any remaining will be used to help offset any future costs related to his cancer.
