Bill needs hip surgery and Costa Rican socialized medicine will not help him. We need to get him to the states for treatment and to move back where he has family and friends who can help.
Bill Bartlett was one of the EARLY PIONEERS of AOR Radio aka Album Oriented Radio in the early 70’s.
He started WPDQ FM in 1972. That station became a Top 10 rated AOR Station in The USA.
During that time period, he exposed Australian Music to an American audience that was totally unaware of its existence. In the early 70’s, he programmed early Aussie Bands SPECTRUM, PIRANA,CHAIN, CAPTAIN MATCHBOX and that list goes on. By the mid 70’s his station was practically the only station that played the SKYHOOKS. To the surprise of the industry, the SKYHOOKS came to Jacksonville and sold out a 10,000 seat Colosseum. The next day, they could barely get 200 in a club in Atlanta.
By the mid 70’s the Aussie music scene hit pay dirt and Bill was again the pioneer of this phenomenon. It is without any dispute that Bill was the first American programmer to play the LITTLE RIVER BAND as well as the biggie: AC/DC. He is featured in at least 3 published books for this success.
Besides Australian music, Bill was quite instrumental in the success of Charlie Daniels Band, Kiss, and countless others that are now home names in the industry. He was also a major contributor to the success of Tom Petty.
It doesn’t stop there. As a record company executive, he helped revive the career of HEART, was a major contributor to the success of Tina Turner, was a major factor in the success of Iron Maiden, Missing Persons, The Motels, Thomas Dolby, April Wine and so on….NEVER asking for any monetary reward either while in radio or the music industry. It was all done for the LOVE of radio and rock music.
Now Bill needs your help. He retired in Costa Rica a few years back only the Social Security he collects. Medicare does not work here and he could only afford basic Medicare.
He needs a HIP Replacement as soon as possible. The X-rays show no cartilage at all and he has a bone spur in the hip the size of an arrow head…so he is in constant pain.
The cost of surgery in the USA is over $50,000 but here in Costa Rica, he can have the entire surgery done with a new titanium hip for around $14,000. The government health system here has given him an appointment for January 2024 so that is not acceptable. He must have the surgery as soon as possible to regain some quality of precious life.
Helping Bill would be a great gesture for this once National Music Treasure of the USA and Australia.
