Help A Veteran Buy a Bicycle

Donation protected

Pam is a 58-year-old disabled Veteran (80%) who is entirely reliant on others for transportation. Prosthetics are devices to help Veterans move safely through space.  A bicycle is such an example of that, but I'm not sure Veterans Affairs understands that. :)

"I've been researching online, but the only programs I can find provide recumbent bikes for amputees, and that's not what I need.

“Cycling would be good for me and help me to feel connected to other people,... more a part of the local community. I have arthritis and other challenges, so I’m not as mobile as I should be,” she said. “For me, it’s going to be a slower process to become more active, and I think bike riding is helpful for both body and mind.”

Studies show that physical activities provide the following clear benefits for disabled Veterans:

- less stress,
- reduced dependency on pain and depression medication,
- fewer secondary medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension. etc.),
- higher achievement in education and employment,
- more independence

Participating in cycling allows Veterans to redefine themselves and live an active, healthy, and fun lifestyle. Walking, swimming, and cycling are good choices of aerobic exercise for osteoarthritis patients because they are less stressful on the joints (low impact) compared to activities like jogging.

"A lot of people think disabled vets are living high on the hog, but that's just not true. People would be shocked to know just how many live in poverty and that thousands of veterans are homeless. I've been homeless, and I'm just now starting to get back aspects of life that most people take for granted. Not all the way there yet, obviously, but there is progress."

Unfortunately, Pam's veteran's disability compensation is her only source of fixed income, and it's just not enough to allow her to buy a bike. Bicycles can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars , but the expense doesn't end there. She will also need bike locks, front and rear lights, a basket for grocery shopping, and a bike helmet.

You can be a part of changing this veteran’s life.  Donate whatever you can afford. Donations of any size will help!! Or, if you can't donate, that's okay, but can you please help by sharing this page with your friends on social media?

We hope you will help Pam to reach her goal to become more mobile and to transform her life.

Thanks in advance!
