The Backyard Gardeners Network (an affiliate of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs) is a Lower 9th Ward based nonprofit organization whose mission is to sustain and strengthen the historically self-sufficient and deeply rooted community of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, LA using our own food growing traditions as a platform to build community, revitalize the neighborhood and preserve our cultural heritage.

Backyard Gardeners Network runs a 12-week paid youth internship program for teens (14-19 yrs) in the Spring and Fall seasons in the Lower 9th Ward.

Through this work/study program, New Orleans youth:
- build character and leadership skills
- gain valuable experience in community outreach, growing food, and community programming
- participate in educational trainings that ground and give context to their work activities - food justice, Black land loss, political education, and more
- go on regular field trips designed to broaden the youths' outlooks and opportunities, while having a good time and team-building.

We could not do this program without the support of our collaborators and partner organizations - Rethink New Orleans, Kayak-ityat, Take Em Down NOLA, the Justice For Eric Harris campaign, Indian Springs Farmers Association, StudioBE, Grow Dat Youth Farm, and the National Black Food and Justice Alliance! Thank you and we hope to continue working with you!

It also takes money. We need to raise a minimum of $12,500 to run the program in 2017. We plan to raise $5,000 through this campaign ($790 already raised in initial GoFundMe) and at least $7,500 through an event fundraiser planned for early 2017. Where will the money go? The funds that BGN raise will go towards: youth salary (they earn $50 per week on average), planning and program coordination, and materials and supplies for trainings and field trips.

Your donation is tax-deductible. Our fiscal sponsor, Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
