On a July day in 2003, ‘Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis’ and ‘no cure’ were the six words that destroyed my world. At that time, I was a vibrant, independent,‘able-bodied’ 32 year old teaching professional with a  job that I adored, wore fabulous high-heeled shoes and my life was full of amazing experiences. Over the following 15 years, MS progressively stole the use of my legs,my hands and  even my energy levels. Walking became a burden, my legs felt like lead and I wobbled even without the wine!I used crutches then ‘graduated’ to a zimmer frame, for stability, followed eventually by the dreaded wheelchair. Wait a minute! wheelchairs are for disabled people and I didn’t ,or perhaps denied, that, indeed, I was ‘disabled’.During this time, my love for teaching kept me motivated to ‘not give up’ and as long as I saw myself as a teacher I had a daily life purpose. My life stopped again when the MS stole my teaching away from me in 2018 and forced me to retire from my life purpose. So here I sat, a ‘disabled’ wheelchair-user having lost my life purpose and feeling burdensome to both my family and society. I felt my ‘never give up’ spirit dying. ‘Do you know about Manx Carriage Driving 4 the Disabled?’asked an outreach worker from Leonard Cheshire(who permanently loans Teddy the pony to the charity). Considering my second passion, after teaching is animals my spirit flickered. PONIES? (I said in my loud American accent) ‘Do you mean I can drive ponies?’ I asked. After my ‘taster’ session, I was so excited that I could not wait to book my next session. After four sessions, I am ready to buy my own glitzy riding hat  and raise money for this amazing charity that truly changes lives. Enabling. The numerous volunteers that make Carriage Driving 4 the Disabled enable us be able to achieve what ‘abled bodied’ people can do. It is clearly evident that every volunteer has a passionate commitment to the charity and the opportunity that it provides us, the disabled community. With the new four-wheeled Fenix carriage, adapted reins and with my amazing trainers, I have been able to successfully drive the pony, MYSELF! I felt independent, empowered  and an enormous sense of achievement. My ‘never give up’ attitude has returned and has reignited a new ‘life purpose’ for me and motivated me to view myself as enabled rather than disabled. I am deeply grateful to all the volunteers and to the sponsors who help make this opportunity happen. Thank you all for changing my life.  Manx Charity Reg  No 1172
