Two souls active in retirement, sharing a lifelong commitment to social justice, joined together through today’s internet matching magic!
Bethann Witcher Cottrell retired in 2017 as a Senior Food and Nutrition Advisor at the international non-profit, CARE USA, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Theophus ‘Thee’ Smith retired in 2018 as an Emory University religion professor in Atlanta. Together Bethann and Thee maintain residences in both Atlanta and in Quito, Ecuador, where Thee and Bethann serve as independent consultants and facilitators.
During the last 30 years Dr. Cottrell worked throughout Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia in food and nutrition security. Her work focused on social norms, gender equity and power dynamics to reduce systemic poverty. She used qualitative research and social and behavior change to provide capacity building opportunities for women and girls.
As emeritus faculty after 30 years at Emory University, Thee Smith continues as a priest associate at the Cathedral of St. Philip (Episcopal) in Atlanta. He also remains active as an experienced trainer in racial dialogue with a focus on truth-telling and trust-building. As a scholar-activist he co-founded and continues to provide leadership for the Atlanta-based nonprofit, Southern Truth and Reconciliation--STAR Inc. at www.southerntruth.net.
Your contribution will assist Thee to promote diversity programming, community building, reconciliation initiatives, and restorative practices including restorative justice.
