Help Ben Beat Cancer

$13,375 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 73 people in 35 months
In late-2016 a large tumor was found on the right kidney and adrenal gland of my husband Ben. Both were surgically removed. In early-2017 we learned that the cancer had metastasized to his liver and lungs.

With aggressive treatment we have hope for a cure, but it will likely cost $20,000. While Ben is undergoing treatment he's not able to work. I'm only working part-time so that I can take care of Ben.

We are hoping to find a way to supplement the lack of income and to help with some of the costs not covered by insurance.

Thank you for your generosity!

I am sad to report that two metastases have been found in Ben’s brain. Ben experienced an episode last week that prompted a call to 911 and a trip to the ER where they performed an MRI that revealed the tumors. The larger tumor is located in his right frontal lobe and the smaller is located in the cerebellum.

After consulting with a brain oncology/radiation specialist at the UW Medical Center, we’ve decided on a treatment strategy. The first approach will be to use what is called a gamma knife, which delivers targeted radiation to the specific tumors. Ben will have this treatment on Tuesday, May 8th. In June, Ben will have a scan to see if the treatment was effective.

The oncologist has told us that there is no known cure, and it is highly likely that Ben will develop more tumors. If effective, the gamma knife can be used repeatedly, but at some point, it may no longer be an option. If the gamma knife is not effective we have a couple of options, including full brain radiation and/or surgery.

There are many unknowns at this point regarding what the future holds. There are potential complications with the gamma knife procedure that may necessitate more time off from work. If Ben has to undergo full brain radiation, he will likely be unable to work for quite some time.

Our financial cushion has been depleted during these past three years of treatment. We humbly ask for your help in getting us through the difficult time. We remain hopeful for the best outcome, and appreciate your prayers, love and support.

Hi everyone. Thank you for your donations - we are just about half-way to our goal of $10,000. Ben finished his first round of IL-2 therapy. It was a rough 3 weeks, but, Ben is a fighter and determined, so he got through it and is now recovering at home. The strangest side effect is that all of his skin is peeling, from head to toe. We're literally sweeping up piles of skin flakes that have fallen on to the floor. Ben is also feeling very fatigued, but, it gets a little better every day. He'll have another CT scan in about a month, and then possibly another 2 weeks of IL-2 in July. Thank you again for your support and donations. Please feel free to share our campaign with your social media contacts. Thanks again, Susan
