Benefit Concert for Girls Education

Natick High School’s Change the World Club has embarked on a mission to empower girls in poverty by raising money to host a benefit concert for Starfish International, a grassroots program for educating girls in the Gambia West Africa. We are raising money today to host the concert and also support THREE STARFISH GIRLS TO COME TO THE EVENT and witness our community’s love and support for them as they pursue their education. The mission of the Change the World Club is to help provide girls in the Gambia, a small country in West Africa, with an education. The cost of schooling past grade 6th, the point at which government funding is no longer provided, is $100 per student. The average Gambian family lives on $1 per day. Therefore, a child’s education is roughly 1/3 of a family’s yearly income. This financial burden, along with cultural challenges, prevents girls in Gambia from receiving an education. After this age, most girls are expected to conclude their education and either marry a polygamist or submit to a lifetime of domestic drudgery. However, funding the tuition of a Starfish girl begins an alternate and far more a virtuous cycle: educate one girl and the positive effects ripple throughout her immediate family, her future family and her community. Educated girls are empowered to get jobs and learn how protect from disease. They build self-esteem, self-value, and grow in the primary roles in their society. The Change the World Club is not only raising money for the Starfish Girls but also building friendships with them and learning from them through pen pals and video messaging. In supporting these Starfish Girls pursue their dreams, it is found that we too are deeply encouraged and inspired. The impact is certainly not only felt in the Gambia but here in our high school as well as we learn and make connections to their lives. We hope it will be a beautiful and inspiring celebration uniting the whole community for this cause!
