Ben Nevis hike in aid of NF Ireland
My name is Gareth Lynch and I live in Drogheda Co.Louth on the east coast of Ireland. On the 22nd of April I am taking a trip to Scotland to hike Ben Nevis, the highest mountain on the British Isles.
I am self funding my trip and all proceeds will be going to The Neurofibromatosis Association Of Ireland.
My 7 year old son Ben has neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Ben has many neurofibromas (benign tumours) as well as a plexiform neurofibroma on his arm. He has difficulty with gross and fine motor skill tasks so many everyday things are challenging for Ben. Funding and awareness with regards to his condition is vital for Ben and others.
NF1 is a genetic mutation which causes tumours to grow on nerve pathways and many other symptoms, it affects on average 1 in 3000 people.
The Neurofibromatosis Association of Ireland funds an NF clinic which is located in the genetics clinic in Crumlin childrens hospital. The clinic plays a vital role in giving a diagnosis and then referrals according to best practice.
