Faileas Literary House presents Bedrock: A Delicate Exchange by Hannah Boyle and Caitlin McKenzie, illustrated by Keri Johnson.
Womanhood is complex. It is intimate and delicate. It is vulgar. It is indispensable.
Bedrock: A Delicate Exchange involves three women coming together to form a collaborative relationship that is unfound in literary platforms. Through a transparent discussion dawning from femininity, we aim to curate a collection of organic responses to mental health.
This is a project that emerged from a dear friendship. Two women were encountering the crippling vulnerability and isolation that comes with mental illness, specifically mid-diagnosis. The expectation of strength beyond means provoking a fatigue that is ever present and prohibitive.
Through this, Caitlin Helinski and Hannah Boyle found great similarities in their daily struggles. This prompted them to seek out a platform to manage their fluctuation between constant anxiety, mania and chronic depressive states.
Our primary focus through this all-female led project is to create a space of equality, where each artist can organically grow. We invited Keri Johnson, a local illustrator from Barrie, to join our project and open up our writings with beautiful illustrations.
On this day we ask of you to assist us in raising funds to publish our anthology; in a culture where art is suppressed by superiors day in and day out, publications that represent 'the taboo' are fundamental.
Our goals:
-This publication will be a conversation through poetry and illustration pre, post, and mid diagnosis.
-We will be a part of an important conversation about mental health from the midst of it.
-We will ground ourselves in womenhood, creating an intimate, all female led project.
-We will support and lift up the voices of local writers and artists.
We believe that the female voice in art is vital, and want this to be our first step. In discovering how we ourselves want to present our art, we hope to pave the way for other women in Barrie and the surrounding areas to do the same. In supporting our first publication, you're enabling us to:
-Print and distribute the first publication under the umbrella of Faileas Literary House. Our aim is to publish by August 2018.
-Support our launch event.
-Contribute to future publications of local artists work.
