Becky to study Astrophysics Canada

Donation protected

I am raising funds for my daughter Rebecca who is studying Astrophysics at UCLAN in Preston.  She has been offered the opportunity to study a year abroad in Canada for her second Academic year.  For this opportunity she will need a certain amount of finances to cover the living costs and additional fees required. I have enclosed her personal statement.  In the photo I have provided you can see my daughter at an event where Buzz Aldrin was a guest speaker as you all know he was one of the three Astronaughts  who journeyed into the outer regions of earths atmosphere and this is one of her goals to follow in their footsteps "to infinity and beyond".

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Broadening my cultural experience is a key goal in my life. By participating in the Study Abroad scheme I will have the opportunity to expand my global view, whilst supplementing my Astrophysics course. The program will help my progression to a career as an astrophysicist by teaching me the skills of international relations (a vital aspect of the research profession) as well as building my confidence in travel and communication.
Studying in Canada will improve my employability by teaching me new ways of working as well as securing new and unique life skills. The new experiences awarded to me by Canada would increase my ability to adapt to new situations. Furthermore, by expanding my horizons and meeting new people, I will have the chance to form strong bonds both for friendship, and within academia.
There are a multitude of reasons that I choose Canada as my destination. The world renowned friendliness and open armed approach of the Canadian people is legendary therefore I feel I could easily fit in with this welcoming style. A further reason is the Canadian scientific groups, such as the Canadian Space Agency and missions such as the Cascade Smallsat and Ionospheric Polar Explorer (CASSIOPE). Canada also offers a variety of extra-curricular activities including equestrian activities which I participate in the UK. I am currently active in an equestrian riding programme in which I have both achieved a scholarship and won awards.
Further reasons as to why Canada, are the breath-taking views which would be perfect for hiking and trial rides. There are also other great opportunities for extra-curricular activities in which to participate in, such as ice skating. Being a figure skater I look forward to the opportunity to develop this skill further. There are fantastic mountains to climb and hike in, which draws me, being the outdoor enthusiast I am.

The reason I chose Kwantlen Polytechnic university is that it is situated in a good area close to the city of Vancouver and not to far from the sea. The University also offers a good selection of astronomy modules relevant to what I would like to later research. What I have also found is the University has a Beekeeping programme which is of great interest as its wonderful seeing a university support the preservation of bees as they are essential for the life of this earth and us human beings.

I love experiencing new cultures, so have done some traveling on my own as well as with my family. As a family we have been on holiday to Zinkwazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. We also travelled to Florida, Orlando as a family and that was an amazing experience. I have travelled twice to Hong Kong and Ruyuan in Gaungdong Province. This was on a Chinese exchange programme where I got to practice as well as advance in my speaking, writing and listening of mandarin Chinese. The area was rural, mountainous and beautiful, the people are humble, hospitable and eager to learn and practice English. I have travelled to Holland with an Orchestra in which I played the Cello. My other travels have included Paris, Barcelona and Madrid, the Museum in Barcelona, CosmCaixa was wonderful and very enjoyable. Locally I have been to the Lake District where I enjoyed hiking and rock climbing where I also completed my Gold Duke of Edinburgh. I have travelled to Edinburgh where I visited the museums and the Zoo. The Pandas were the highlight of my visit there. And recently went to Brussels to wonder the Christmas market.

I have completed my first internship with Dr Victor Debattista. This involved me to measure the thickness of gas layers in the simulations given to me and understand how this evolves as a function of time. These results were then used to study the impact of stellar feedback on the vertical simulations of galaxy simulations. Then most importantly it was observed that these results showed that the gas thickness was contributing directly to the stellar disk thickness. I am fairly proud of the project outcome especially having no prior experience with programming and only just finding my feet with physics and its applications. This summer will hopefully prove to be better with a leading project of my own working with more of his simulation.
