Beaverton Shade Structure at BM

What is Camp Beaverton?
We are a group of queer women, trans, genderqueer, LGBTQIAAP+ folks who create an intentional, experimental, and experiential Burning Man theme camp. We celebrate sexuality, self-exploration, and respect for one's journey by encouraging education, participation, and inquiry. Our goal is to provide safe space for women and trans folks on and off playa by focusing on consent, sex positivity, respect, non-violent communication (NVC), and restorative justice. We provide a Beaver Dome for workshops and play space for women and trans folk, and provide a shade structure for safe space for the entire Burner community, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. Our workshops include training about radical consent, empowerment of oneself and of others, pegging, fisting, masturbation meditations. And we're famous for our play party the Strap-on-a-Thon.

What is the fundraising for?
We are fundraising for a shade structure this year because our offerings are made better and safer for everyone with these infrastructure improvements.

Our project lead, Ansel, is a mechanical engineer. They are excited to build a structure that is safe, covers a large area, and screens our camp from the street. They say, "I designed a shade structure that is modular and efficient. This current campaign sets us up for a shade structure we can add to for years!"

How does the shade structure help the community?
This year's new shade structure would provide more shaded area than our current structure. This means more escape from the sun while energy gets hot as Beaverton hosts various workshops and Clit-Tails queer mixers for the community. The shade structure is separate from the women and trans-only Beaver Dome, so the shade structure increases cool space for people of all genders to spend time at our camp. The shade structure will also provide screening and privacy from the main road, creating emotional safety for campmates, visitors, participants, and passers-by.

What is our fundraising goal?
Our main goal is to fundraise for $2,000 for a double-decker shade structure. We aim to implement the first level this year and the second climbable level next year with this funding. Additional funding will support any of the following: improved camp infrastructure, purchasing safer sex supplies, repacing tools and inventory, and purchasing more toys and harnesses for the Strap-on-a-Thon (a play party for women and trans folks at Burning Man).
