Children's Book about Dog Rescue

$770 of $7,000 goal

Raised by 27 people in 12 months
Created December 29, 2017
Hello! My name is Alice Hanh and my dog Bear and I want to make a difference in the world by writing a children's book. The book is to help advocate for dog adoption and rescue (#adoptdontshop). The book is going to be written for children ages 5-10 mainly and for pet adoption/rescue lovers!

As a dog lover and former journalist/teacher, I have a big heart to shift the current and future generations to become pet rescuers. My hopes is that one day the book that I write will become published and change even one child's heart to grow up and want to save a life by adopting!

Currently you can follow updates on our book progress via our blog here. But this specific post here will lay out some more details for you (written December 2017).

This picture shows the Wall of 50 . These are 50 real adoption stories from all around the world that were compiled through the power of social media, Google forms, and the insane support of the adoption/rescue community around the world! It only took less than 2 weeks to gather these stories, and it blew me away. I wish to share these stories with the world and you!

I am in the process of writing the book and if you follow my timeline in the post here, the book will hopefully be published by Summer 2019! It typically takes about 4-6 months to get a book published after it has been accepted by a publishing house. We would need the funds by October 2018.

The goal of $7,000 is for the following:
- Publishing: $3400-$5,500
- Materials: $1,000 Printer and paper, notebooks, sketchbooks, illustration materials and other resources
- Other: $500-1000 Gifts to thank my contributors, social media campaigns, website funding, etc.

Your contributions and donations are extremely appreciated and any funds that are not used towards publishing the book and for what was mentioned above will be donated to a local dog shelter of your choosing.* I will give more details in the future, if this applies.

I also hope to be able to speak to schools and children around the country one day. And I want to write more books in the future. Dream big!

Thank you so much again and please feel free to follow us on our blog and Instagram. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us.

*Local shelter = a shlelter in WA state, as Bear and I currently reside 20 minutes north of Seattle.

Hello everyone!

First of all, HAPPY SUMMER from Bear and I in Seattle, WA! It's been a HOT summer this year, but enjoyable.

Secondly, I am SO sorry for being MIA the past few months. My job, as many of you know, is a summer-intensive job as the Camp Director at Run To Win Outreach and summer camps are winding down!

So far, I have been editing true stories so that everything is in the same format and tense! It is taking a lot longer than I intended, but hope to get through all 22 amazing stories in the next 2 months.

Now the best part:

I have some BIG, EXCITING news!!!!

PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING OUR ILLUSTRATOR FOR THE BOOK, IRENE LEE!

Together Irene and I will be working on creating the best illustrations that help bring the book and your doggies to life. Initially I wanted to illustrate the book myself, but I truly believe in collaboration and honoring others' talents. Why not create the best WITH the best? #allfortheloveofdogs

Get to know Irene & Remy

Q: What is your background in art, illustration and drawing?
A: I studied in Vancouver Film School in Canada, graduated with Classical Animation and 3D Character Animation. I worked at Titmouse Studio on a Dreamworks Netflix show called "Home: Adventures with Tip and Oh" as an animator and currently work as an animator for "My Little Pony".

Q: Share with us why you wanted to join this project. What are your hopes from this book?
A: I noticed many artists that I follow move on to writing and illustrating children's books. Its a way for them to creatively send a message and/or tell a story to the world through their art. So when Alice asked me if I was interested in being the illustrator for a book about rescue dogs I was very excited. I recently adopted for the first time and learned a lot. My heart goes out to dogs who struggle to find forever homes and hope this book will encourage children to adopt.

Q: Where do you and your doggo live now? What do you like to do in your free time?
A: Remy and I live in a house in Seattle~ During my free time I like to draw, relax or go on long walks with Remy. He recently learned to fetch so we've been spending a lot of time in the yard with the ball :)

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a dog parent?
A: I've only had family dogs, so being a single dog parent has been very different. But I love that we have such a strong bond, and can rely on each other. Remy has helped me through my emotional struggles, and in turn he has gained a lot of confidence every since he came home with me. Despite his fear of being abandoned and moving from one home to another, he continued to remain sweet and love on people, really eager to please. He is such a different dog now than he was when I first met him, and I love that he was able to overcome his fear and anxiety and opened up to his new home.

Now for the updated timeline:

By early September
The newly designed website will be up and running. An old colleague, amazing web designer and graphic artist Hayley Jang, has stepped up to graciously help build the website pro bono! I am very grateful and we will be making the switch from .com to .org. I will announce that when it is officially up and running and will hopefully be able to update regularly again. Thanks for your patience! ❤

By the end of August
I will have written the final draft of the main story!
Irene will have practiced drawing all of your dogs and playing around with different styles for the book!! Ooh, aah!

By the end of September
I will have gone through all the true stories and edited them.
Irene will have the first draft of the main storyline illustrations completed!

October - November
Alice will have pieced the story together and cut down the true stories into 1-2 paragraphs to place them as bios at the end of the book; Alice may send you an email asking more questions about your dog's story
Irene will have worked on more illustrations and finalizing images. It's going to be amazing!

More updates to come in the next months as we start working hard on the book to be able to share your dogs' stories with the world!

Again, thank you so much again for your patience, love, and support! Just so you are aware, the GoFundMe ( www.gofundme.com/bearnosebest) has raised 10% of our need so far. So that is SUPER awesome!! Irene and I will also be working on gaining financial support and fundraising/marketing during the next few months to be able to publish the book in a timely manner! Our goal is to raise enough funds to get the book published by the beginning of next summer or sooner. If you have any suggestions or want to get involved, let us know! :)

That's all we have for you right now, but if you have any questions about the process or just want to say hi, PLEASE do!! You can find us on IG @bearnosebest and the current website www.bearnosebest.com (which will be Under Construction soon and converted to .org with a fresh new look featuring the book).

Big hugs and butt sniffs!
