Destination Imagination TAGJAMZ

Team TAGJAMZ needs your help to go to Global Finals!  On April 7th, TAGJAMZ advanced to Destination Imagination's Global Finals competition.  It is set to take place May 23 - May 26 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.   Over 8000 students from 45 states and 17 countries will attend and compete!

We are excited to represent Brushy Creek Elementary and our hometown of Round Rock, Texas!  Only 2 schools in Round Rock qualified for a Global Finals invitation!

WHY ARE WE SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS?

*We are the first Brushy Creek Elementary (BCE)  team to advance to the State Tournament.  Over 300 teams competed at the Regional Tournament at Cedar Ridge High School.   Only the top 2 teams in each challenge panel advanced to State.

*We are the first BCE team to advance to the Global Finals Tournament.  Over 500 teams competed at the State Tournament in Mansfield, Texas.  Only the top 4 teams in each challenge panel qualified for an invitation to Global Finals.

*TAGJAMZ is also excited to be one of only 4 Round Rock ISD teams to be invited to Global Finals.

*We are very excited that we won the Highest Instant Challenge score at State.  This part of the competition is completely spontaneous.  It’s all about teamwork!

*We have been a part of Destination Imagination at Brushy Creek Elementary since the program started there 3 years ago.  This is huge for us.  The past three years have taught us so much about how to be good team members and work together to accomplish a goal.  Each one of us has different talents, skills and interests.  When we work together, we are stronger and better than we are individually.  The team skills and lessons we have learned are invaluable.

*We will continue to work hard to represent our community.  The experience of attending Global Finals is the ultimate "win"  for us.  We are so excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet, learn from and cheer on teams from around the world.  This will be a positive experience that we will remember and cherish for the rest of our lives.  Thank you for your support.  It means the world to us!!!

WHO ARE WE?

We are TAGJAMZ.  Each letter is the first initial of a team member’s  name.  We were debating between TAGJAMZ and JAGMATZ.   Since we all love playing TAG and eating JAM, though not at the same time, it was an easy choice!

WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?

Attending Global Finals is expensive.  Each level of DI competition requires a registration fee, supplies and t-shirts (required by the DI organization).  The initial cost of registering a team is $95.  The Regionals fee is $100.  Advancing to State was an additional fee of $230.  The Global Finals registration fee is 30 times that of State!

Our team does not receive any financial support from our school.  We also do not receive any funds from the Round Rock ISD.   We are very grateful that Heart of Texas Region CPSO has generously awarded our team a $750 grant.

Our fundraising goal of $9,000 represents only a portion of the total fees and expenses for registration for tournament participation, transportation and lodging for our 7 team members and 2 managers.

TAGJAMZ is open to exploring all fundraising options, please let us know if you have suggestions.

*We hosted a Kona Ice event on April 19th.
*On April 24th, we will host a TAGJAMZ party at Dart-Em-Up with 50% of proceeds to benefit our fund.  Thank you Dart-Em-Up!
*We have a Chick-Fil-A night at the 620/Lakeline location on April 25th where we will receive 10% of receipts of customers who mention TAGJAMZ to the cashier.   Thank you Chick-Fil-A!

Thank you for your time and consideration.  We really appreciate the encouragement and support we’ve received from our families, principal, teachers, friends, school and community.  We are grateful for you all.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

*Please note that this fundraising campaign is for Team TAGJAMZ and their Destination Imagination Global Finals competition.  These funds are NOT for Brushy Creek Elementary School.  Please contact our school or the BCE PTA if you wish to donate to our school.

WHAT ARE TAGJAMZ?

TAGJAMZ are pre-adult beings with a strong attraction to Skinny Pop, donuts, pizza, strawberries, duct tape, cardboard and creative problem solving challenges.  They can often be found near places where cardboard can be easily obtained, like Costco or green recycle dumpsters.  Each February they gather with other creatures like them and compete to try to find their way to a mythical place called Global Finals as part of the Destination Imagination quest.

WHAT IS THIS COMPETITION ALL ABOUT?

Our competition consists of  a TEAM CHALLENGE and an INSTANT CHALLENGE.

We chose the engineering team challenge called "Drop Zone.”  The task is to build a structure that support weights dropped from above.  The only materials that can be used are wood, glue and fishing wire.  Our structure held the maximum amount of dropped weight of 720lbs!

We also had to create and present a performance about a sudden event with dramatic impact, build an “event depicter” using technical methods, integrate the idea of structure testing into the story, build props, and make costumes.

The set-up, performance, demonstration of the event depicter and structure testing were all to be presented within our allotted 8 minutes of presentation time.

All materials used in the Team Challenge (presentation & structure) have to be itemized and can not exceed the $150 budget limit.

The Instant Challenge puts our quick-thinking abilities and team skills to the ultimate test. The challenge is to accomplish a task in less than 8 minutes with rules and parameters that are given to us on the spot.

We’ve been working on this year’s challenge since October.   We wrote a story about the power of positive thinking.  “Positivity is awesome!  At the end of the day, it takes your worries away!  It makes you feel really awesome!”  We also wrote a jingle about the power of HOPE.  Never lose hope!

WHAT IS GLOBAL FINALS?

It is the largest celebration of creativity in the world.
