Baxter HS Drama Performance

$2,000 goal

Our Baxter scholars are primarily Latino and African American students from underserved communities in the South Bay and Los Angeles. Several students travel by bus just to attend our school and have unique opportunities to be self-directed learners.

This is our first year implementing a Drama Class for 10th and 12th graders. My focus this year was to really allow students to develop their self confidence and empathy. Performing arts, especially improvisation, has helped my students to understand how to think outside the box and be more confident going into unfamiliar situations. When we read and studied the libretto for Candide,  students had an opportunity to really dive into the various roles to understand the characters and the themes behind the storyline and create their own operas. Performing and acting has really grown my students to relate better to one another and has encouraged them to show compassion and tolerance for others. As a result, my students have really learned to trust their ideas and abilities.

To showcase what we have learned over the course of this year, both drama classes will give a final performance in "A Night of One Act Plays" at a local theatre in San Pedro. In order to accomplish this, we need the funds to rent the facility, purchase  props and costumes, and build a set for each play.

We hope you will consider donating to help support our year-end drama performance!
