Founded in 1971, Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR)* has been providing advocacy and support to survivors** of sexual violence and exploitation for nearly 50 years. Our free-of-charge services, which are available in both English and Spanish, include crisis intervention, advocacy in police interview, court and hospital settings, community education and outreach, and individual, peer and group counseling. We are deeply rooted in the Latinx and LGBTQIA+ communities, and although our name is Bay Area Women Against Rape, we serve people of all genders who have experienced sexual violence. BAWAR defines sexual violence by the narratives of the survivors who have experienced it. We are here to believe and validate the community that we serve in a trauma-informed, culturally-appropriate and accessible way. In the first three months of 2019 alone, BAWAR advocates have taken over 600 crisis line calls and provided support for more than 70 survivors who are in midst of the criminal / civil justice systems. This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, please consider supporting the continuation of these services by donating.

Below you will find a list of some of our services and the cost that would be associated with each. All of our services are free of charge, so if you donate, you are helping us offer them to survivors who may not otherwise be able to afford or access them:

$5: grounding tools for survivors to have, including stress balls

$10: informational materials to be distributed to clients and other community members about BAWAR’s services and crisis line

$15: one hot meal for a youth who has experienced sexual exploitation and may not have consistent access to food

$20: one hygiene kit including shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant and more for clients

$25: one hour of a state-certified sexual assault crisis counselor staffing BAWAR’s 24/7 crisis line

$50: supports a survivor in receiving peer counseling services with a state certified sexual assault crisis counselor

$75-$150: supports a survivor in receiving in-person therapy services with a clinician

$300: all associated fees for one person to take the 66-hour sexual assault crisis counselor training and receive state certification to serve as an advocate for BAWAR

*Although our name is Bay Area Women Against Rape, we serve anyone affected by sexual violence. BAWAR defines sexual violence by the narratives of the survivors who experienced the violence. We are here to believe and validate the community we serve in a trauma-informed, culturally appropriate and accessible way.

**The word ‘survivor’ is being used here as shorthand to denote individuals who have experienced sexual violence. It should be noted, however, that not all who have been impacted by sexual violence identify with this word.

** La palabra "sobreviviente" se usa aquí cómo  para denotar a personas que han sufrido violencia sexual. Tenga en mente que, sin embargo, que no todos los que han sido afectados por la violencia sexual se identifican con esta palabra.
