2016-17 Youth Basketball Program

Donation protected
Hello all, my name is Brian Robinson.  I wear a number of different hats under one umbrella: being a basketball coach.  I am a varsity girls high school coach at Bishop McGuinness Catholic HS, I run a local youth club basketball program for girls (Winston-Salem Stealers) and boys (Twin City Jazz), and I head coach the Triad Trackers, an adult, coed wheelchair basketball team.

I am trying to raise money to start a new wheelchair team for ages 7-18 and to provide scholarship opportunities for families who cannot afford to play in our club basketball program.

I know there are kids who are disabled and have no outlet to participate in our (or other) club program(s) in any sport.  The cost for a new adaptable basketball wheelchair runs between $2000.00-$3500.00 each.  Assuming we have a team of ten players, that total cost would be around $35000.00 just for the chairs.   The next cost would be purchasing a trailer to haul the chairs from tournament to tournament on the weekends.  The adult team plays in the Carolinas Wheelchair Basketball Conference which consists of teams in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.  There are challenges to get the adaptable chairs for the adults, who can drive, to games along with their every day chair.  The youth team would be a greater challenge.  The cost for a large enough trailer would be around $4000.00.  Uniforms for the youth team would be an additional cost of approximately $3000.00.

The Winston-Salem Stealers / Twin City Jazz programs have approximately 250 kids, grades 2nd-12th, participating year-round.  Of those 250 participants, almost 35% of the program can't afford to play.  The cost to participate, on average is $375.00. That cost covers practice space, tournament fees, and insurance.

I am having an introductory meeting on August 18th for the youth wheelchair program and hope to get the team up and rolling by the spring of 2017. The club program scholarships can be used throughout the year.

Providing healthy and positive avenues through basketball is what I have had a passion for since 1994.  The programs have grown beyond my wildest dreams and with the growth comes the need to keep supporting them financially.  Both the club and wheelchair teams are 501 C 3 non-profit organizations.   Feel free to learn more about the programs using the web site links below and thank you in advance for any support in any amount that you can provide.
