Wilson Ikens began filming Brighton Area Schools Board Meetings, two summers ago, at age 11.
For several years before this, we, as the Brighton Area Schools community, were able to raise funds for a professional videographer. We were unable to raise the funds in 2016-7 for the professional, and the meetings went on unrecorded for several months.
After Wilson filmed several meetings, a Go Fund Me Account raised enough funds to pay him approximately $25 a meeting for any subsequent meetings in 2016. Wilson was thrilled to be taking on such a large responsiblity and to be paid! The Board Meetings were once again available to parents, teachers, and the community. (They are posted on the Positive Action for Brighton Area Schools YouTube page and links are shared among several parent and school Facebook pages.)
In 2017, we raised $570 to pay Wilson for the dozens of meetings he recorded and posted on social media.
This summer, our goal is to raise enough funds to cover the 2018 meetings. We roughly figured $30 per meeting as a reasonable target. Wilson has been recording meetings since January, 2018, without renumeration, and will continue to record, regardless of our fundraising results. The $570 he earned last summer through fall was for January - December of 2017.
Wilson will attend the meetings, film, upload, and post them regardless, of any renumeration. However, as a mother, I feel it is important that I at least set up a format in which he has the opportunity to earn some income for his efforts. He intends to use any proceeds from this year's efforts to buy an acoustic bass guitar for which he has been saving up.
As with the last campaign, I will make the initial contribution of $200.00. Any contributions (or just comments!) that active parents, faculty, and community members can make will help Wilson feel like the professional that he aspires to be. The whole experience has been so wonderful for him and the fact that he earns more money than most kids his age is not least among them!
Thank you, all, for being so involved in your public schools and in their governance. We are blessed to have such an active and supportive community behind our Bulldogs!
