The Bartlett Historical Society and Plans for a Museum
The mission of the Bartlett Historical Society (Bartlett, New Hampshire) is the “collection and preservation of data and items pertaining to the history of Bartlett and to promote educational opportunities pertaining to the history of Bartlett.” Over the years, the Bartlett Historical Society has amassed many historic documents, genealogies, books, recordings, pictures and paintings, and other artifacts that tell the story of our town’s past in events, and most importantly, its people.
The town of Bartlett, New Hampshire has a rich history dating back to its incorporation in 1790. Named after Dr. Josiah Bartlett, the second signer of the Declaration of Independence, Bartlett has been a farming town, a logging town, a railroad town, and hospitality town. Our town’s history makes for a great story. Ironically, we do not have a place to display this history!
To remedy that situation, the historical society is working on our most ambitious project ever – the creation of the “Bartlett Historical Society Museum.” The museum will be available to all who are interested in Bartlett history, including our school children. Working with the Bartlett School District, the historical society obtained a lease on the St. Joseph Church building (immediately behind the school). This building, built in 1890, gives us a very historic place for the museum. While the building has a solid frame, it needs a complete renovation including a new roof, building stabilization, environmental cleaning (lead and asbestos removal), the installation of new mechanical and HVAC systems, and a completely restored interior. The renovation cost estimate is $450,000. This is where we are asking for your help and generosity.
How can you help? We are currently managing a capital campaign to raise the money for this renovation project. The Bartlett School Board has encouraged us to take on this project.
