My name is Don Guerra and I am Tucson's Community Supported Baker!
My Barrio Bread loaves have created an enthusiastic group of bread lovers, who appreciate the results of long fermentation, hearth baking, and attention to craft and nutrition. After six years of baking in my garage turned bakery, demand for my bread far surpasses production capabilities. It is time to expand!
I'm very excited to announce that I was selected as a recipient for the USDA Local Food Promotion grant! These important funds will be crucial as I build collaboration within the local grain economy of Arizona, purchase new equipment to expand my production, and increase my use of local grains.
Yes, this means that Barrio Bread will be moving into a new premises in the coming year!
I need your help with this project, because expanding a business in today’s economy takes a great deal of money. The US Department of Agriculture believes in my vision and now I am asking my community to do the same.
My job is to come up with the additional funding to make this dream come true. With your support, I will be able to increase the availability of Barrio Bread to you, my community. I will also be able to continue my work with farmers, scientists, and food producers to ensure that we have a viable and healthy grain economy. Using local flours, reduces the carbon footprint of my loaves, invigorates our local economy, and requires a my personal investment. Additionally, I will be able to focus on local education and my Bread Without Borders project.
Minimizing my debt during this expansion, will make it feasible for me to ensure my dedication to the finest quality bread, while taking on a significant increase in overhead costs.
I like to think that all of you will share a little piece of the new oven that is used to bake your bread, just like the age old tradition of the community oven located in the heart of many villages. Barrio Bread will always be devoted to the community it serves, as well as, the larger community of bakers and bread lovers around the world.
