Barra de Potosí Children's Library

Donation protected

In 2006, property was acquired and construction began for the Children's Library of Barra de Potosí.

Little by little through personal donations by tourist visitors and neighbors the library took form and opened in December 2008.

Today,  it is a wonderful library with 2000 titles, many art and educational materials and toys, and a garden space for the use of the children in the community.

Unfortunately, because of safety concerns in the state of Guerrero where Barra de Potosí is located, the library has not been able to attract the normal stream of volunteers from abroad to keep it running and has been closed now for an extended time.

We (Patty & Mitchell) had the good fortune to live in Barra de Potosí in 2013-14 and met Laura who started the libary and the volunteer at the time who was running in (Kathrin Jaeger from Germany).  We were able to volunteer ourselves with a Halloween haunted house during our time living here.

We always wanted to come back and found the perfect opportunity when we learned the library had closed for want of someone to live here and run it on a daily basis.  We contacted Laura and a couple of months later, we pulled in to the village and started work on cleaning and organizing the libary for re-opening.

With all of the materials for the children of the community, we are in need of some things that we're hoping you can help us obtain.  Some are large and long-term but some are things we could use right away.

Here's a partial list...

- Extension cord (the libary doesn't have power but Laura will let us use hers - it's a huge help to have a fan or two).
- A fan or two!
- Seeds/plants for garden
- Razor knife (for the teacher !)
- Yarn
- Calculators
- Plastic sheet protectors
- Chairs
- Folding tables
- Table Cloths
- White Board Calendar
- Whiffle ball & bat
- Electricity (the building is wired but doesn't currently have service which will be a big investment)
- New Fence
- Water (need well and pump)
- Broom
- Bucket
- Dust broom
- Extension Cord
- Hammer
- Materials to repair fence
- Paint (door - rustoleum)
- Paint (exterior blue)
- Paint (interior pink)
- Rake
- Hand Saw
- Sheets of plastic

As we purchase items with donations we receive (we're optimistic that we'll receive some), we will share a google sheet with a specific list of items and prices paid.

Thank you for any support you can offer.  $5, $10, $25, $50, or whatever you can spare and share.
