Bananageddon The Film

We're a group of ecologists, trying to change the way consumers think about where our food comes from.

Bananas are going extinct.  Our favorite fruit is disappearing, even as we can still buy them in grocery stores, because the way they are grown is unsustainable.  For years, corporations that grow bananas have tried to bury this problem under millions of pounds of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but most experts agree that this system has only about 10 years left.  And then ... no bananas.

Unless we change the system.  Around the world, there are small banana producers growing new varieites of bananas in diverse agroforestry systems, where nature is incorporated and food is grown sustainably.

You might be surprised to learn that just 1.5¢ for every $1 spent on bananas makes it into the hands of the workers who labor in Central America to produce the fruit that we so easily (and cheaply) pick up at the grocery store.

Our film will focus on small producers in Costa Rica who are producing bananas in these alternative ways.  We hope to tell the story about how we as consumers can support these small producers and bring their products to North America and Europe.

Help us save the bananas!

Your contribution will go towards the costs of producing Bananageddon. These are essential to the project, as they will allow us to visit producers of new banana varieties and film the footage we need to tell our story.

We are a multi-cultural team of mostly first time film makers! Brought together by our ambition to explore and find solutions to the banana crisis, we all have backgrounds in Ecology and Conservation.  We believe that story telling can be a huge driver for change, and we want to reconnect you with the journey your banana has taken to reach you.

Hello banana backers,

Earlier this week we wrote to you about exciting developments made by the banana team; travel arrangements have been confirmed and we are in touch with Costa Rican producers.

Along with our new Bananageddon Information Pack, we now have a GoFundMe campaign which allows you to donate in pounds.

With six weeks remaining and £4000 to raise, we would be really grateful if you could share this GBP account with as many people as you know. Along with Crowdfunding, we are also continually seeking to form partnerships with organisations who may be interested in becoming donors, such as those related to botany and sustainable food production. Updates on these soon to follow!

With huge thanks, your Bananageddon Team!

Hello banana backers!

Huge leaps have been made in the making of Bananageddon in the last 30 days: communication with small producers is well under way, dates have been secured and flights have been booked. There are just six weeks to go till the Bananageddon Team travel to Costa Rica to begin filming.

This means that Bananageddon has become a reality. We would like to thank you for your support via GoFundMe, as without you this would not have been possible. The £2,500 raised through crowdfunding, along with the contribution of £5,250 made by Imperial College's Exploration Board has allowed us to get ever closer to our £12,000 fundraising target.

However, with only six weeks to go and another £4,000 to raise, we are still in need of help. If you pledged on Kickstarter and would still like to support us, we would be immensely grateful if you could transfer your donation to GoFundMe. We must continue fundraising if we are to ensure filming is successful and to allow this documentary is to reach it's full potential.

To help with this final push, we have some new tools. Our GoFundMe page has recieved a make over, and we would like to share with you our Bananageddon Information Pack. We would be indebted to you if you were able to share this information pack with friends and family, colleagues and organisations. We are looking to bring on "Partners", individuals or small businesses able to donate £500, and would be especially interested to hear from those who strive to operate in a sustainable and ethical way.

Coming soon will be more blog posts from our team members, and updates on our travel plans! The next chapter in banana history is on it's way.

From the Bananageddon Team, thank you and happy new year!
