Bad Luck Happens, We Need Help

$2,403 of $100,000 goal

On June 29th, 2017, Nik got in a bit of an accident. And by a bit of an accident, I mean nearly got crushed by a car while skateboarding and received a traumatic brain injury consisting of a fractured skull, prefrontal bleeding, and a clot. No biggie.
Nik was in the ICU at UF Health Jacksonville for six days, finally being released on July 4th (a true 4th of July miracle). We left the hospital with less than $150 to our name. We were already struggling to stay in our apartment, while also trying to save money to move into our new apartment in August. Now, Nik will be unable to work for at least seven weeks, and since they need to be under 24/7 care for this time, I cannot work either.
We are left with $100,000 worth of expenses and $0 worth of income. We are desperate. If there is anything any one can give, we would greatly appreciate it. Please and thank you.

P.S. Dr. Skylar Astrid can only do so much for Nik! Her stethoscope is plastic, after all!

First of all, we want to thank everyone for the help you all have given us. We wouldn't have been able to get this far without you. Despite it all, though, we are not out of the woods yet.

The other night, Nik and I sat down to put together our new budget starting once our financial aid hits mid-September. Just paying what we have to to stay afloat, we will still be in the negative each month. We keep waiting for the effects of this accident to fade, but our financial situation remains a constant reminder of how our lives were changed in an instance.

Bottom line is we still need help. And we will continue needing help until we can both get our feet back on the ground. Please, if you have anything to give, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all for helping us pick up the pieces.

Tomorrow, we will be receiving $500... And nothing else until mid-September. We have put forth a great amount of effort to raise money for our family, from this campaign to filling out surveys, taking up odd jobs, and even entering contests. We are running out of options, though, and right now we have only $500 to live off (and move with) for the next month and a half. We need your help now more than ever. We have moving expenses, utility/necessity/credit card bills, cats to take care of... And somehow we also have to eat. So please, try and help us out. Anything helps.
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us so far. We are immensely grateful.

Given what a gigantic need this GoFundMe requests, it seems only right to keep our supporters fully in the loop, despite usually keeping our financial lives (and personal lives, for that matter) fairly private.

Our awesome supporters have kept us fed (Skylar hasn’t been home yet since the accident, so no worries about her) and helped us get our rent paid for August 1st. Thanks so much. We really do appreciate every cent that has been given to us.

Though we know it was a poor long-term financial decision, we took out a crap loan to pay our outstanding move-in fees on the new place, which we had already signed the lease for before the accident. Our hands were tied there, so we found a way to get it done.

Our supporters have helped us get our overdue bills down from $1600 to $1500. There are still $1500 of bills that are already late, though, and we are starting to deal with cutoffs. It is what it is, but it is scary and it sucks.

Our next priority following our overdue bills is Caitlin’s surgery the first week of August (standard, but necessary surgery on her mouth which was also planned before the accident). It looks like our cost on that is about $500, which is something we’d love to pay for with cash money…but as it happens, the place takes Care Credit and we have just a little money left on our Care Credit card that will help with that.

In the same range of priority, we guess (but we want to prioritize Caitlin’s health), we have another $550 worth of bills that are due as of today, 7/19/17. This means, as of tomorrow, they pile onto the already frightening overdue bill total. Also, as of 8/10/17, we have some more outstanding bills to the tune of $200 that will also clump into that overdue bill pile.

Following that, our next priority is school books for the upcoming term, which begins mid-August. We are prioritizing Caitlin’s books first, which will cost about $500. Then we’ll see about Nik’s if possible, which will cost about $300. They require books for class—who knew?

After that, we begin to worry about rent again. We’ll have to come up with about $750 before September 1st to pay our rent.

On top of all this, even though we’ve only received a handful of medical bills (there are still a ton pending), we already owe $200,000 for the accident. Don’t get us started here. Did we mention Nik has rocking insurance, had already met her deductible for the year, and that’s STILL the total we are at?

Just so you don’t think we’re not doing anything to help ourselves, keep in mind that Nik can’t work and Caitlin is responsible for their care right now. However, Caitlin is trying to get on as a tutor at several online companies, plus she’s picking up some weekend cleaning gigs. It’s not much, but she’s trying. Also, Nik keeps short-term disability insurance and is trying to get that activated since it applies for the first time in 5 years, as well as looking into regular disability. We should probably mention that even though she’s not supposed to leave the bed, she’s been online almost every single day for about 15 hours trying to make money from home. It’s not like we’re sitting around twiddling our thumbs—we are trying. Who knows? If we ever find the car that caused Nik’s accident, maybe we’ll look into our options there.

So…please keep helping us if you can. Donate. Buy gift cards to grocery stores. Send us money via PayPal. If you are also income-strapped, we get it. Don’t put yourself out. Maybe just share our GoFundMe with friends. Tell people. Talk us up. Tell them we’re awesome. All you do is useful, and we’re grateful.

The first set of medical bills are in and we're at about $35,000 for the life-flight and $40,000 for the hospital trip, both of which are due immediately. We're shocked and discouraged tonight. If anyone has anything they could give to help us out, we would greatly appreciate it!
And thank you to everyone who has donated, we love you all
