NEW YORK STATE BACKYARD THRU-HIKE

Tax deductible
I’m raising money for the Fresh Air Fund, a non-profit that helps connect New York City children from low-income communities with summer outdoor activities along the East Coast and Southern Canada.

I myself was an inner-city kid. I grew up in Elmhurst, Queens and the most nature I ever got to see as a child was Jones Beach and the suburbs where my cousins lived. So I know firsthand how being stuck in the city can be depressing for a kid. Children need to be able to run, play, and explore in a natural, green, and safe environment. This is why the Fresh Air Fund's work is so important. If I could raise money for them, I'd feel like I was giving these kids an opportunity to experience the outdoors at a much earlier time in life than I did.

So, to help raise this money, and spread awareness of the incredible outdoors in the New York City area, I will be hiking the Long Path in the Catskills, an 83 mile long section of mountainous terrain beginning in Sundown, New York and ending in Windham. It’s 9 days and 8 nights in the wild (except for one pitstop in the hamlet of Phoenicia) and it’s all within 150 miles from Manhattan. It's basically in the Big Apple's backyard!

Please donate a dime for every mile I hike!

That’s only $8.30, or the price of one lunch at Pret a Manger.

Or donate whatever amount you can. Every penny I raise will go to the Fresh Air Fund! Your donation will help kids be kids in the only way that being outside can do.

And here's an overview of my route:

I'll be passing through Phoenicia, Woodstock, Kaaterskill, and many more of the Catskills' prime hiking destinations.

I’ll be posting to my social media feeds leading up to my departure in mid-September and throughout the hike. If you donate more than $25 I can give you a shout-out from the trail by writing your name on a sheet of paper, taking a selfie with it in the frame while I’m out in the wild, and posting the pic to my Instagram feed. Let me know in the comments section if you'd like me to do this with your above-25 dollar donation!

Here's a typical view from one of the many summits I'll be passing along the route:

Can you believe that this is just a hop, skip, and a jump from the most densely populated metropolis in the world? Thank the DEC of NY State for that!

Visit the Fresh Air Fund's website here: www.freshair.org I hope you can donate to this campaign and help out inner-city children get outdoors. They may not have any other way of spending time outside and feeling like a kid than the opportunity the Fresh Air Fund can give them.

And please spread awareness of the outdoors. Start with Leave No Trace. It's a great way to understand our responsibilities in preserving the few wild spaces we have left. Here's their URL: www.lnt.org

Happy Trails!
