Backcountry Airstrip Safety Videos

WHO WILL BENEFIT
Backcountry pilots, and those who fly with them as passengers, can benefit from instructional videos that increase safety and orientation. Several backcountry safety/educational videos are already streaming online, including the 1992 Idaho Aeronautics’ video.  The Aeronautics’ video is getting long in the tooth (the avionics and navigation aids are extremely dated) and the other online videos that various pilots have posted are great for entertainment purposes, yet lack mission-critical information for safe flying in the Idaho backcountry.  Several terrific print references are available, yet this format lacks inherent immersive qualities.  A multi-media presentation can help a pilot who is new to the backcountry, or a seasoned veteran who needs to refresh his/her memory, fully understand and appreciate recommended standard operating procedures for safe use of backcountry airstrips.

HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
I will fly into 28 Idaho "community" and "developed" airstrips (IAN classification) and record videos of operating in these backcountry airstrips with a flight instructor, commercial pilot, and long-time backcountry pilot/instructor.  Our pilot has a gazillion hours (including hundreds, much more likely thousands, of backcountry hours), and he holds CFII, ATP, MEL, and many other certificates.  He has been my primary flight instructor for 13 years and I very much appreciate his attention to detail and ability to fly and teach with tremendous precision.

I plan to operate a 360-degree video camera inside the aircraft cabin, along with one exterior camera on a wing, and a third camera in a yet-to-be-determined location.  Placed above the instrument panel on the dash of my airplane, a viewer will be able to pan to view any angle in ultra-high definition, such as views of the instructor/pilot; outside the windshield on approach, landing, taxi, takeoff, or departure; or each wing outside the window.  The view will be much like a flight simulator, except these videos will be recordings of actual flights.  We will also capture actual flight audio for the instructor to narrate and an audience to hear the radio calls of actual recommended operating procedures, as well as back-on-the-ground commentary.  Plus, actual elevation, ground speed, heading, vertical speed, and other flight information (from the GPS), and will be continuously displayed on the video.

HOW SOON DO I NEED THE FUNDS?
The total cost of producing videos of all 28 backcountry community and developed airstrips is more than $10,000 (airplanes and UHD camera equipment are not cheap!).  However, I plan to initiate this project and start recording as soon as a minimum balance of $8,000 is reached.  If we are able to raise all funds by the end of July, we will have a good shot at completing the videos in 2018.  If not all footage can be gathered in the summer of 2018, we will capture the remaining footage in 2019.  If we exceed our fundraising goal, we will continue to "primitive" airstrips.  I do not plan to capture video of "wild" or "other" airstrips.

WHAT THE SUPPORT WILL MEAN TO ME
This is an important mission which will save lives.  What's more is that this project will help pilots and other aviation enthusiasts obtain a glimpse into the Idaho backcountry, and how to approach and depart from these (sometimes) challenging airstrips, from the comfort of their living room or desk.  Providing an enhanced, multi-media presentation of informational videos for Idaho’s backcountry airstrips will result in greater situational awareness for backcountry pilots, enhanced backcountry pilots’ use of the recommended standard operating procedures, and increased awareness of general aviation and how the Idaho backcountry can be accessed.

I'LL BE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP...
...that I will post these videos on YouTube and Vimeo for advertisement-free viewing.  I'll post each video as it is completed, so that interested supporters and other viewers can provide reviews and helpful comments for future videos.

Thank you for supporting backcountry aviation safety education!
