Backyard transformation at El Refugio

El Refugio, a ministry of visitation and hospitality for immigrants and asylum-seekers detained at Stewart Detention Center and their loved ones, is raising money to make our back yard safe, fun, inspiring, and relaxing for the families we serve. 

We received our beautiful hospitality house as a gift from the incomparable Full Frontal with Samantha Bee last year, and it has transformed our organization. We are able to serve more people and provide more services. 

Many of the families who stay at our hospitality house have children separated from their fathers and loved ones, not knowing when - or if - their family will be reunited. We want to transform our outdoor space into one that will work for children of all ages and abilities - and especially for children who have experienced trauma.  

Your donation will help us create a butterfly-shaped sandbox with an art station, a slide, a swing, and a climbing structure - all designed by an occupational therapist.

Your funds will allow acclaimed muralist and DACA recipient Yehimi Cambron to paint an inspiring mural.

Your generosity will transform the barren yard into a shady spot for reflection including bird feeders, a fountain and a bench in memory of a beloved supporter of El Refugio.

And, your help will allow us to plant a cluster of trees in memory of those who have died at Stewart.
