Dahaba y Mariama son de Garawoll, un pequeño pueblo en Gambia,cerca de la frontera senegalesa.
Después de pasar 10 años viviendo en España y los últimos 2 en el Reino Unido, su único deseo es que su familia tenga estabilidad y reunirse con el resto de la familia en Gambia.
Su proyecto es abrir una panadería en Garawoll, su ciudad natal.
Demasiadas personas se ven obligadas anualmente a desplazarse de Africa en busca de una forma de mantener a sus familias, rompiendo sus estructuras familiares, sociales y fragmentando sus comunidades. Al desarrollar medios de vida diversos y viables a través de las pequeñas empresas, las comunidades pequeñas podrían comenzar un proceso para eliminar los motivos que obligan a las personas a abandonar su país…. Su éxito también potenciará y animará a otras personas a establecer sus propias empresas.

Gambia fue una antigua colonia británica, que tras un acuerdo con los franceses, fue creada artificialmente por los británicos. Se independizó del Reino Unido en 1965 y desde entonces hasta 1994, el país fue aparentemente una democracia liberal multipartidiaria. En 1994 un golpe militar tomó el poder y el país continuó bajo un estilo autoritario hasta el sorpresivo resultado de las elecciones de 2016, que representó el primer cambio de presidencia desde el golpe de 1994. Durante el período de gobierno militar, mucha gente tuvo que irse, incluídos Dahaba y Mariama, para buscar un futuro mejor en otro lugar.
Esto fue relativamente fácil para Dahaba y Mariama, ya que ella nació en España, por lo que pudo migrar con su familia.
Inicialmente fueron a Girona, donde Dahaba trabajó primero en la construcción y más adelante en la agricultura, una mano de obra no calificada tìpica y con pocas opciones de empleo. Dahaba solo tenía estudios islámicos en Garawol. Mientras, Mariama, cuidó de la familia y estudió. La vida era dura, pero había esperanza. Sin embargo, la crisis financiera española tuvo un impacto devastador en la familia y se vieron obligados a trasladarse a otro lugar para encontrar trabajo.
Emigraron a Birmingham, Inglaterra, con sus cuatro hijos donde permanecen hoy.
Su sueño de crear un futuro mejor para sus hijos, no se ha materializado, ya que ha habido pocas posibilidades de encontrar un trabajo mejor.
Con lo que han aprendido, Dahaba y Mariama quieren regresar a Garawoll y abrir una panadería. El pan es un alimento básico muy importante en Gambia y ambos sienten que una vez que regresen con su extensa familia, y con un medio de vida, estarán en una posición más fuerte para crear una vida mejor para ellos y sus hijos.
Estamos buscando donaciones para comprar, aquí en Europa, maquinaria de segunda mano para la elaboración de pan y enviarlos a Gambia, donde Dahaba y Mariama han comenzado a buscar locales en su pueblo. Su sueño de volver a “casa” y poder ganarse la vida decentemente allí, en este momento, es su principal motivación .
Su determinación es fuerte y su proyecto viable.

Too many people are forced yearly to displace themselves from Africa in search of a way to maintain their families, breaking their social structures and fragmenting their communities. By developing diverse and viable livelihoods through small business, small communities could begin a process of removing the disincentives that force people to leave their country. It’s success will also empower and embolden other people to establish their own enterprises. Take part in building the infrastructure of a small town in Africa by investing in the establishment of a bakery in Garowall, Gambia!
Gambia, was a former British colony, which was artificially created by the British, following agreement with the French. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 and from 1965 to 1994, the country was ostensibly a multi-party liberal democracy. In 1994, a military coup took power, and the country continued under authoritarian style until the surprise result of the 2016 election which was the first change of presidency since the 1994 coup. During the period of military rule many people left - including Dahaba and Mariama - to seek a better future elsewhere.
This was relatively easy for Dahaba and Mariama as Mariama was born in Spain, so she was able to migrate there with her family. Initially they went to Girona, Spain where Dahaba worked on building sites and then in agriculture - typical unskilled labour with few employment choices. Dahaba only had islamic schooling in Garawol. Whereas, Mariama looked after the family and studied. Life was hard, but there was hope. However, the Spanish financial crisis had a devastating impact on the family and they were forced to move elsewhere to find work.
They migrated to Birmingham, England with their four children where they remain today. Their dream of creating a better future for their children has not materialised as there have been limited possibilities for finding better work. With what they’ve learnt, Dahaba and Mariama want to go back home to Garawoll and open a bakery. Bread is an important staple in Gambia, and they both feel that once back with their extended family, and with a livelihood, they will be in a stronger position to create a better life for themselves and their children.
We are seeking donations to buy second-hand bread making equipment here in europe that we can ship to Gambia where Dahaba and Mariama will have begun to look for locations in their village. Their dream to go "home" and be able to make a decent living there is their main motivation at this point. Their determination is strong and their project viable.
