Bache Martin's Science Funds

Donation protected
Christopher is in kindergarten and he loves trees.
The different types of trees and their characteristics fascinate him. He often asks his teacher to research trees on the internet or gather books on trees. Trees are frequently his chosen subjects for his morning journal.

He lights up when we learn about the natural environment. His classmates also light up when we talk about animals, air and weather, insects, plants, and water cycles. Our objective is to amplify this love and curiosity about all things science by making science a permanent part of our curriculum, beginning in kindergarten. We feel strongly that science is a tool that our students can use to better understand how they experience the world, and ultimately how to change and improve it. Science is a subject that teaches them how to critically ask questions and consider their experiences in order to face problems, seek out their solutions, and communicate them to others. The Bache-Martin School is a K-8 school in an urban community in Philadelphia that receives Title 1 funding, meaning that a high percentage of our students come from low-income families. The funding for Philadelphia public schools has been at crisis levels for years, though our school community wants to do better by our students. We are really excited to announce that this year our school has created a Science Teacher position in which each of our students in grades K-4 will have the opportunity to explore and investigate the world around them using science-based inquiry methods. In order for us to fully support this new position, we are need of supplies and curriculum. Our students need a science curriculum that will give them hands-on experiences aligned with our science standards. These kits and curriculum we're requesting will give each student in grades K-4 an opportunity to explore with kinesthetic experiences they may not have otherwise. The activities and experiments can be used for class instruction/demonstration, and then put into stations so they can explore and experiment in small groups. By having these experiences from an early age, they'll be able to become better researchers, scientists, readers, writers and mathematicians. With your support, these opportunities to experience science in a collaborative way that encourages critical thinking across all curriculum areas will set them up to be lifelong learners.
