Grant's Small Intestine Transplant

Hello this is our son Grant. He was born with a rare birth defect know as Short Gut Gastroschisis, (when the belly button closes with the small intestine outside of the body while in the womb) he has only 4cm of functioning intestine.  Grant is 1 of only 10 cases in recent history to be born with this.  Due to this he is fed though an IV line directly into his heart.

Grant has undergone more the 20 surgeries in his short lifetime. He has had his line replaced 14 times due to breakages and infections.  Grant is on strong antibiotics 3 times a day 7 days a week because his body is prone to infection.  Grant is currently on the transplant list.

Grant is hooked up to 2 pumps, 18 hours a day, when he is on his TPN.  He carries the pumps in a little bookbag.  He has learned to carry the bookbag by dragging it behind him!  The bookbag, with the pumps and the bags of fluid food weigh over 10 pounds.  He never complains about carrying the bag either.

The money raised here will be used to cover some of the cost of the transplant and medicines.

Grant is a care free tough little boy. He takes everything life throws his way with a smile.  Anyone who he encounters in life instantly wears a smile.

When on TPN your liver and kidney start to fail so Grant just got a liver biopsy. Last year his liver was a 2/4 (0/4 is 100% healthy, 4/4 is 100% dead) and this year his liver was a 0/4!! His liver completely healed itself! The doctors at Georgetown said they have heard of this before but have never seen it! So he only needs a small intestine transplant. He is our miracle baby! =)

Update on Grant....he got a fever on Thansgiving Day, we took him to the hospital and after 3 days of being sedated and on antibiotics they discovered it was Staph Infection. He was flown to Children's Hospital in Denver, CO and immediately was placed in a room in the PICU. They did a chest X-ray and found that the infection went septic (it spread to his whole body). The doctors took out the broviac line in hopes that the infection would start to clear up, when it did not they knew they needed to proceed to more drastic measures. After an echo of little Grant's heart they found that he has endocarditis (the infection spread to his right heart valve and is living in his heart). He is on 3 different types of sedatives, ROC which is a drug that temporarily paralyzes the body, 2 antibiotics, a breathing tube down his throat, arm restraints so he does not fight or try to move and numerous IV's in his body in case they need to give him meds quickly. So far no progress has been made, he still has the infection and he is still on the breathing machine. The team of Doctor's say he will be here for the next 6-8 weeks. He spent Thanksgiving in the hospital and will now spend Christmas in the hospital as well. We want to give him the best possible Christmas and make him forget that he is in the hospital. We are asking for your donations because every little bit helps.
Comfortable and dreaming of the future =)

Baby Grant is 2nd on the list for a small intestine transplant. He is currently a patient at Georgetown University Hospital and is seen by one of the best surgeons on the East Coast. The cost of a transplant can be very overwhelming. He will need to be on medicine for the rest of his life. His parents will have to relocate to Washington, DC for the three months he is in the hospital. We are asking for the help of the community for support through this process. Baby Grant's only chance for survival is a small intestine transplant. To help with the financial burden of Grant's uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive. All donations are are tax deductible. Please consider a contribution.
