Baby Theo’s Head Reshaping Helmet

Donation protected
Our beautiful baby boy, Theo, was born on 02/03/18 and we noticed he had a slightly odd shaped head. This was again picked up by our Health Visitor as it hadn’t settled down a month or so later.

We have tried to carefully position Theo so he lays on the protruding side of his head however he moves it straight back within a few minutes! We soon discovered Theo couldn’t turn his head very far to his left and would not lie on the protruding side of his head to try and even it out.

Theo has since had to see a physiotherapist who confirmed he has a severe flattening of his skull at the back right of his head. This has in turn caused his forehead to be slightly larger on his right hand side and his ears to be misaligned.

The physiotherapist needs to see Theo for repeated checks every 3-4 weeks.  The advice given is for us to try every single day to give Theo as much tummy time as possible and try to encourage him to put pressure on the protruding side of his head to attempt to flatten it over time (I.e. the next few years).

There is one other option available which is for Theo to have a specially designed helmet to correct his head shape. We would travel to London or Cambridge to a specialist who would design and make a helmet  for Theo’s specific head shape. Theo then would have to go back for 2-4 weekly appointments to have the helmet adjusted as required.

Sadly this is not something we can afford as a family and we also do not have any extended family who could help with the cost.  This treatment is not available on the NHS. By the time we would be able to save the required £2,500 (approx) for a helmet Theo’s skull may have hardened into the position it would be in permanently whether that be flattened or more normal shaped.

So we thought we would try a Go Fund Me page to see if we could attempt to raise something towards Theo’s helmet. Ideally he needs this to be fitted between 4-7 months old. The younger Theo is when he starts treatment the higher the success rate will be for the helmet to work and for a normal head shape in the future. We therefore have a consultation with the cranial specialist booked for when he is four months old (the end of June). Any help would be gratefully appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Any additional funds raised over our target will be used for the Go Fund Me page fees, travel costs for Theo’s repeat appointments and we plan to donate anything then outstanding to another page or charity to help another child with severe Plagiocephaly.
