Baby Havill's Healthy Heart Fund

In February, We got some of the worst news any new parents could receive. A couple weeks prior we had our 20 week ultrasound and were over the moon finding out we were having a little baby boy. However, the ultrasound tech went from talkative to very focused about half way through the exam. After leaving she really stressed that we needed to call our doctor on the following Monday if we didn't hear from her. We pushed these thoughts to the back of our mind's and focused on being positive...we were having a little boy!!!

Monday rolls around and Kristine receives a phone call from her doctor. She informs her that the ultrasound is either unclear or there is potentially an issue with his heart. She said it could be an ASD (atrial septum defect) which is a hole in between the left and right atrium of the heart and usually heals on its own. To be safe, Dr MacDonald scheduled appointments at sick kids for a fetal echo to examine the heart. Little did we know it would be much more than an ASD.

As it turns out, our little man has TGA (transposition of the great arteries), meaning his pulmonary artery and aorta are connected to wrong sides of the heart and he will not be able to properly flow the oxygenated blood throughout his body. This also means that he will require open heart surgery within the first week of his life. Needless to say, we felt our world crash around us. But, in that moment, we felt the magic that Sick Kids Hospital can bring to families. The cardiologist explained everything throughly, told us his odds of survival and life expectancy, and what a future with a son with TGA looks like. Their positivity, kindness and knowledge built us back up and had us leaving feeling confident and a little less scared for what's to come.

We are grateful for the love and support we have already received. The hard part is still to come, but we look forward to raising a strong young man with a badass scar, a badass story and we will get to tell him how many people had his back from the very start.

We are still figuring all of this out and could use all of the financial support we can get. Some of the things that your support will help us with are basic things like hotel stays, gas, food, and just basic needs for us and the little man, but unfortunately this isn't the type of medical issue that will go away quickly. TGA will require some special care items for the little guy in his first few months such as medication to special onesies that give us easier access to the little guy without moving him around too much.

Anything helps, and We are so grateful for all the love and support we have. We cannot thank you enough for giving us a little bit of your time to read our little man's story so far, and we hope this can help give him the best chance at an awesome life!
