Baby boy Beagle Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Nate and Christina are our brother-in-law and sister-in-law. They recently discovered that their sweet little growing guy has a moderate/severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia(CDH). After many tests, they discovered that the baby’s stomach and liver are above the diaphragm and that they have moved the heart to the right. They are concerned about the lung development and have said this is not something they can handle in Fort Wayne. They are sending them to Cincinnati, OH for treatment/delivery/post care. They recently went to Cincinnati again and had more ultrasounds and meetings. The little guy hasn’t gotten any better and is still moderately severe, so they have decided with the doctor’s advice to go ahead with the fetal intervention surgery (called FETO). In 4 weeks, Chris will have a surgery where they go into the side of her belly, sedate baby, and microscopically go through his esophagus to place a tiny ballon in his trachea to hopefully force his lungs to fill and grow. They take it out 4 weeks later—about a month before he should be born, then they wait for him to come. Chris will have to stay in Cincinnati from when balloon is placed until birth, then she can go back and forth as necessary.
Cincinnati is one of 3-4 hospitals in the country that have done this, and have only done it in 4 babies (3 are home and had shorter nicu stays and 1 did not survive). The doctor doing their surgery has done 15 in Barcelona, Spain as well. Without FETO, they said he would have a NICU stay of at least 4-6 months. But with FETO, possibly 2-3 months without the use of ECMO. So, most importantly, Nate and Chris need prayer. Prayer as they care for their current littles and prayer as they have huge decisions to make about treatments, child care, and travel. Secondly, they will have a HUGE financial burden to bear from traveling from Fort Wayne to Cincinnati, FETO surgery, delivery, an extended NICU stay, and regular home needs while being away for an extended time.
