Fire Recovery

$3,290 of $5,000 goal

Dear Family and Friends,

Last year my partner Peter and I put our hearts, souls, lots of time, and the money I had inherited from my dad’s passing into an extensive upgrade of our home in Kenwood. We had just finished it when the Tubbs/Nuns  Fire burned it completely to the ground. We are so fortunate that we had moved out during the remodel, but it is still a very devastating emotional and financial loss for us.

Unfortunately, we have been informed that even though we will be reimbursed for our loss, it will be far less than what it will cost to reconstruct the house. We will not be compensated for the seven months of wages that Peter lost while he worked full time on this house, or any of the new building materials, appliances, etc. Reimbursement will take time. Coordinating with the many agencies involved will take time. It will be months before we can think about clearing the site, securing permits, and rebuilding. We are feeling completely overwhelmed by the loss and the logistics of managing the recovery effort.

We have an immediate need. The fire was so hot that even areas of our retaining wall collapsed and when it rains, soil and toxins from the steep hillside our house was built on, run directly across the road and into our nearby creek. Certainly from an environmental standpoint, we don’t want this to happen. Furthermore, we have been informed that we may face fines, if we do not remedy this run off problem before the serious rains begin.

I have never reached out for financial assistance of any kind, and take pride in having always supported myself,  however we could really use a little help now. We would be very thankful if you could help us raise the money to build a new retaining wall.

With gratitude,

Teresa

To all of you,

All the help we have received, combined with what's left of our savings will be enough for us to get the permits and move forward in restoring the septic system, power to the property and well, cutting down burned out trees and repairing the top portion of the retaining wall below the house, which was wood and burned up. This is allowing dirt, debris and ash to fall down next to the road and run unfiltered into the creek when it rains.

The Sonoma Ecology Center in Sonoma Valley has given this property the highest contamination risk to Sonoma Creek without any means to stop it until the Army Corp of Engineers first clears out the burned out house and studio debris, giving us a chance to repair the retaining wall and install waddles to filter the rainwater runoff before it makes it to the creek.

I think I was finally was able to get the Corp’s attention with this situation and they said they are going to have one of their field engineers go to the property to figure out what they can do.

While the County is trying to staff up to accommodate the demand from over 6,800 homes and buildings destroyed by the fires, they are issuing practically no permits for anything, so I have had to be creative in acquiring the necessary permits to rectify the environmental and property concerns I have.

I am continuing to spend more money than I am making dealing with this situation, but with the help we have received from you, it will enable us to move forward, so thank you for your help.

I have been receiving amazing help and caring from the most of the municipal people working with me problem solving and figuring out how to make it work to allow us repair and reconstruct our property and lives. There have been only a couple of people who have been indifferent and uncaring about our situation, but most have been quite the opposite.

Thanks again,

Peter And Teresa
