Botton Health Shop Project

What are we fundraising for?

In a picturesque dale of the North York Moors national park, there is a unique community of over 80 people called the Esk Valley Camphill Community. Around half the community is comprised of adults with learning difficulties. The rest is made up of co-workers and their children. Every year, the community is joined by enthusiastic young volunteers from around the world.

Together, this remarkable group of people share their lives, and work together to build a lively, industrious and culturally creative community. A close connection to the land, the cycles of nature, and the Christian festivals of the year are central to the life of the community.

In Spring 2016, the community purchased a health shop in the local village of Danby. For the last year, they have run this as a social enterprise. Besides providing an important source of income for the community, the shop offers work opportunities for the learning disabled, and a chance for the community to interface with the surrounding villages. One positive outcome of this interaction has been the establishment of a community garden at the local vicarage. It is hoped that through the shop, other opportunities can be developed to continue the communities success in the future.

We are looking to fundraise £85,000 to purchase the current health shop premises on Danby Village Green.

All donations will be given to Camphill Shared Lives Communities Ltd, a company with Exempt Charitable Status. (Company no: RS007279 / Charity no: EW23926)

The challenge

On Friday the 21st of July I will be taking on the next leg of my challenge. Running Hadrian's Wall. My aim is to run it all in one go with my only stops being toilet breaks and quick resupplies with my fantastic support crews. This is the biggest distance I have ever attempted at over 80 miles and is really going to text me physically and mentally. I will be keeping everyone up to date on my progress through social media and updates onto this page. There will also be several points at which people can come meet me to perhaps run see, sections with me or just come on down to show your support. Details of these locations will be added very soon.

Myself

For those that don't know me here is a little background. Up until about seven or eight years ago I was a heavy smoker with a drinking problem. I made the move to curb all that and found a love of the outdoors, natural training and barefoot running. I am a thirty year old father of two who regularly has to squash training in wherever possible in between work and family responsibilities. The reason I am telling you this is so you can see, I'm just an average guy. I'm not a natural athlete but I love what I do. I'm hoping that through these challenges, as well as raising money for a good cause I can help motivate people. I want to inspire people. To those who keep finding excuses not to lace up your neglected running shoes, to those who are stuck in a rut, those who don't feel worth it. I understand where you are coming from, the feeling of an uphill battle. I hope to inspire people to keep pushing and keep fighting.
Please add yourself to the Facebook page, add me on social media. Let's get together to help a great cause and help each other along the way.
