Appeal to raise money for a Memorial to US airmen killed in WW2 crash
An appeal to raise £3,000 for a memorial commemorating American airmen who lost their lives in Crowborough has been launched by the town's branch of the Royal British Legion. The memorial will honour the crew of Hells' Belle' a B26B Marauder Bomber who lost their lives on the then farmland behind The Bricklayers Arms, Whitehill Road, Crowborough in 1944.
It is planned to be unveiled on January 26th 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of the incident.
Chairman of the Crowborough Branch of the Royal British Legion, Nigel Allison, is leading the appeal for funds alongside ex-serviceman, John Bailey.
Helles' Belle', piloted by Lt.Homer McClure, was sent on a mission to find and destroy a flying bomb site in France but due to bad weather and icing up the aircraft crashed in Crowborough on a fatal January day in 1944 killing all the crew.
