Carter Ann Hassell, a 15 month old beautiful baby girl, is my hero. On September 4th, 2018 our sweet baby was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. If that wasn’t enough, she was already fighting a mass on the right side of her brain.
Carter’s story begins at birth. Barbara and Norman were informed that she was born with Down Syndrome. They were informed of the challenges raising a child with Down Syndrome, but never thought Carter would face a battle for her life at 15 months. At that time the question was why. Now we know the link that AML and Down Syndrome have in common. The success rate Is high because of the Down Syndrome. She was born to beat this battle.
Carter was brought to CHKD in Norfolk, and after the blood work came back, we started our seven month battle right away. The very next day, Carter began an aggressive plan of action. The doctors immediately started her on 96 hours of Chemo. In addition to the chemo, this young warrior has had six spinal taps to fight the mass she has had since before we arrived at the hospital. The doctor informed the parents that the mass had already bled out, but thankfully, it bled right back into itself. They said that was a miracle all on its own. Carter is our fighter and she doesn’t even know what she is fighting. She wakes up every morning and can still brighten up a room with her smile. All while going through some of the most painful things a human could ever endure. She has just finished her first round of chemo, and now the doctors will let her body respond for the next 30 days. We hope and pray that this plan of action will work.
I am reaching out to everyone in our community to come together and help this beautiful girl and her family. The Hassells and Dells are a families that would give their shirts off their backs and clothe someone in need. For those of you who know me the Hassells helped save my life 10 years ago when they took in a kid that battled with substance abuse. I became a part of the family early on. Now we are all Family!
