On September 28th Alex was taken to the ER for what appeared to be severe flu.  Blood work gave  a much different possible diagnosis ....Acute Leukemia. Alex and mom were immediately transported to Children’s Hospital in Denver, where  the bone marrow biopsy had confirmed  Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  After a 28 day induction he should have gone into remission.  In October the Leukemia cells were still present so the drs continued on with a  54 day consolidation treatment.  On  1/23/2018 the family  received devastating news. Alex’s bone marrow came back showing he still has leukemia. He is now being moved to the bone marrow transplant treatment. He is going to continue current treatment while he goes through type matching. Once they have a confirmed donor he will live in Denver for 3mos. He must live in the hospital for one month while they give high levels of chemo to completely kill all of his bone marrow before the transplant   Then he will have to live in the transplant apartments for another two months.  After 11 blood transfusions and multiple hospitalizations from complications this family needs our help.

This is an emotional rollercoaster and financial strain on the Oakley family. We know they will be facing financial burdens that no family could plan for or endure alone.  The costs of dealing with high deductibles, travel, meals, missing work while they are fighting this together every step of the way is incredibly overwhelming. Please appeal to friends, family and the greater community to get involved and assist Alex and his family on his road to recovery while they battle to overcome this horrible disease.

On April 17th Alex had his transplant. Everything was going as expected and then on April 25th there was a complication. Alex was diagnosed with cdiff. Then Friday Alex was diagnosed with Veno-Occlusive disease. His liver cannot function properly because this disease causes blood vessels to pop and create blood clots. His liver is unable to process out the fluids in his body. Fluid has been building causing pain and difficulty breathing. The lack of sleep and medications has caused delirium . At this time they are moving him to ICU to get his oxygen under control and for special antibiotics as he appears to be getting an infection in the fluid.

This kid is a true fighter. Mom has not left his side. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Alex Update:
The family met with Alex Oakley's transplant doctor last week and she is amazing!!! There is absolutely no way to sugar coat what his journey is going to be over the next 3+ months.
Alex and Challinna will move up to Denver the last week of March. He must finish this next round of 24hr chemo followed by 2 days kidney rescue first as that is what they have determined finally put him into remission. First week in Denver will be ctscans, mri's, ekg's to make sure his organs and heart can handle the transplant.
Day -8 through day -6 Full body radiation twice a day as outpatient.
Day -5 He is admitted to the transplant wing of the hospital to start the heavy chemo to kill every bone marrow, blood cell (Red, white, platelet) in his body. This goes all the way through day -1
Day 0 - TRANSPLANT DAY!!!
By week two he will have to have a feeding tube put up his nose into his throat as the mouth and throat sores will be so severe he will not be able to eat.
His body will be fighting for these 30days in the hospital as it tries to accept these stem cells and the stem cells fight his body looking for their place. He will have zero white blood cells for about the first 30 days.
Once he is able to leave the hospital he will be in the transplant apartment near the hospital where Challinna will continue his care of IV meds and fluids. He will have blood work done once a week to make sure no viruses are present in his blood. He will not truly have white blood cells for the first 100 days.
He will be on numerous anti virals to help keep these away.
Once home the family has to have basically a clean room environment for him to live in for the first full year until his body heals.
