Awakening Minds

Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. Increasingly it appears that how people cope with mental health problems is getting worse as the number of people who self-harm or have suicidal thoughts is increasing.

Awakening Minds is a self funded community organisation working to lift the stigma attached to poor mental health and to educate marginalised and isolated women in the South Asian community that "it's ok, to not be ok".

On a shoestring budget and with a team of dedicated volunteers we use various methodologies to work in the heart of the community in Rochdale, in order to reach women who desperately need support. We offer holistic therapies, group work, educational workshops and one to one support.

We started with a multicultural movement and musical therapy  event to engage women. Our first event in June 2018 was held in a community space for 25 women who all came and enjoyed a child free night out. But it proved to be so much more than that.

By offering the space to shed responsibilities and worries for a few hours, we managed to lift the spirits of women, many of whom have no escape from the various trials and tribulations they face in their lives  We have ran this event monthly, consecutively since June and every month we see new faces and the group size has expanded from 25 to 70+.

Alongside the musical therapy groups we also reach out to women who need to talk about their mental health and signpost them to seek professional help. The team consists of trained practitioners with various skills, and also  have a licensed mental health first aid practitioner.

We need funds to manage the demand for help. We want to expand our reach to more women and continue our musical therapy events but also offer mental health workshops and  training.

Mental Health First Aid Training is £300 per person. (2 Day)

Mental Health Awareness sessions £25 per person. (3 Hours)

We intend to hold weekly open dialogue seminars with an aim to address Stigmas and Shame.

To run a musical/movement therapy event for up-to 80 women it's cost is around £500.

We are completely self funded. Please support us to give women the chance to "breath", to "live",  to thrive and to understand that it really is "ok to not be ok".
