Ava & us

It started at 19 weeks into the pregnancy, that’s when, during an ultrasound, they discovered that our baby’s bladder was enlarged. At 28 weeks, I was asked to do a follow up ultrasound that ended up changing everything.

The doctor saw that the bladder was bigger than it was supposed to be; so he sent us to BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver so that specialists could investigate what the problem was. We learned from an amniocentesis test that we are having a little girl. Our first meeting with the obstetrician taught us that something is blocking our baby’s bladder and in this case, they simple don’t know what it is. The enlargement of the bladder is so big, that it’s compressing the lungs and since she cannot empty her bladder, the kidneys are also affected. 99.9% of these cases are usually found in male babies witch makes our little Ava special. Unfortunately, after many tests and exams, we still don’t know what the main issue is and won’t find out until she is born.

From what the doctors have been able to see during the many different procedures (ultrasound and MRI), all kind of scenarios have been put on the table. Best case scenario would be that she is able to breath on her own, her kidneys are somewhat good until later on at which time she would need a kidney transplant and some type of surgery will have to be done to fix the bladder blockage. They have also told us the worst case scenario which unfortunately doesn’t end well for Ava.

We are now at 34 weeks of pregnancy and the doctors are planning on bringing her out at 36 weeks. We have been relocated to Vancouver until the next step. My partner and I are from Kaslo and have not being able to work much since we had to travel to Vancouver or Nelson for follow ups done very frequently (every two days).

We are thankful to everyone who has been helping us and to those who may want to help us survive the next few months. We don't have a “goal” in mind because we don't know what’s going to happen and how long it will take to be able to bring Ava home. Every little bit helps and we really appreciate it.

From Ava, Audrey and Mat : Thank you!
