Save Auburn Nursing Homes' Café

Donation protected
My grandmother currently lives in a senior residential community called Auburn Homes. Auburn is a non-profit organization that provides a safe, affordable home to seniors who can’t live by themselves. My grandparents moved there in June of 2014 after my grandpa’s health took a turn for the worse, and the kind people at Auburn took care of both of them during his last days. Since then, they have continued to treat my grandma with kindness and care as she acclimated to a new home and began to make friends.

My grandma’s favorite place in Auburn is the Garden Café, where she goes to eat, drink coffee, spend time with her friends and play games (I know from experience that she is an expert card player). Whenever my girlfriend and I visit, we all sit in the café and get our butts kicked at Rummy. My grandma and her friends love the café because it’s the only place where Auburn residents and their families can sit down and order something special off of a menu. Having a café in the community brings the experience of eating out and making dining choices directly to residents.

A few months ago, the Minnesota Department of Health inspected the café and determined it no longer met National Safety Federation (NSF) standards. Auburn has until January 1, 2018, to get the café in compliance with NSF standards or it will be permanently shut down. Without the café, my grandma and her friends won’t have anywhere to go to eat anything other than what’s on the cafeteria menu, and they will lose the main place they go to spend time together during the day. We would really like to see them be able to renovate their café as it is so important to their quality of life and to their independence.

Auburn has bids to renovate the café and get it in compliance, but it is going to be very expensive and they currently do not have enough money to make the necessary changes. They have been working hard to raise funds for the café renovation and to date have raised nearly $60,000 by reaching out to their community.  However, they still need $34,000 to be able to complete the renovations. Because Auburn is a non-profit organization, they are dependent on the generous support of the community. I know for a fact that everyone involved with Auburn will be thankful for any donations they receive. Thank you all, and please feel free share this campaign with friends and family. Remember even a small donation goes a long way, and your support will greatly help my grandma and the many elderly people who call Auburn home. Thank you!
