ASPCC Alternative Break: Hawaii
Donation protected
Portland Community College's Student Life Office is sending 15 amazing volunteers to build homes in Kauai this Winter with Habitat for Humanity. Students selected for this trip have shown their dedication to serving the community and being engaged on campus.
The beneficiaries of your donation will go toward a family in need of housing in Kauai. The $1200 raised helps offset the costs of the supplies for building a home - not the travel expenses (this is covered by the students with help of the Student Activity Fee). Currently Hawaii has one of the highest homelessness rates in the US and there is a great need for affordable housing in the state.
The students participating in this build are dedicated to not only working through their winter break, but also studying how climate change impacts island life in the Pacific and adds to the challenges of housing insecurity. This is a transformational experience for our students at PCC, but also an opportunity for them to learn about the power of volunteerism and the realities of food and housing insecurity.
