Ashley's OPA Workshop

Hi :)

My name is Ashley. I live in Cape Town, South Africa. And I write poems. Really intense poems.

My chapbook: i know how to fix myself, was published this year by the African Poetry Book Fund as part of their New-Generation African Poets chapbook box set: Nne. I have always been helped by poetry, and narratives about people like me, which stretched beyond my world and broadened the ways I saw myself, and others like me. And this collection has helped me do a lot of good work.

I do not believe that I have fixed myself. But I know how to, and this recognition of the agency to heal myself is so empowering. And because of this, I have been running workshops called, "i know how to fix myself" to help other people pinpoint the parts of their ancestry, story, blood, name, body, country, and language that are ill, and hurt. And very often, we have found that the medicine is in the seeing, the calling/ naming and the acceptance of the knowledge and ability to heal.

I have been accepted to present this workshop at the Oregon Poetry Association 2017 conference this October in Portland, OR, in the US.

I truly believe that this is work that I need to do. And that this is the space I need to go into for this work.

I need your help to be able to do that.

I have calculated the total cost of flights from Cape Town, South Africa, accommodation in Oregon for a week, local transportation and food on the trip to $2650.

Please donate what you can, and help me spread the word.

Thank you.

Love,
Ashley
