Curing Diabetes With Ashley Thomas

Hi There!

I’ve always had an interest in the field of medicine. I love the idea of helping people and changing their lives for the better. Becoming a doctor seemed like the path to take when I was younger, but it wasn’t until I became older and was diagnosed with a life altering illness that I decided to really to make a difference in the medical world. On October 6th, 2017 I received the news that my life would change. I had gone to the doctor for an annual exam when my vital signs came back abnormal. My blood sugar was through the roof. For my own safety, I was immediately sent to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for additional testing.  At first the doctors were telling me “everything will be fine, our machine may be broken”, then I started hearing the word: Diabetes.  Until that day in October I didn’t know much about the disease. The doctors at Wolfson diagnosed me with Type One Diabetes. Not a big deal right? Wrong. My life went from having fun and living life to its fullest to living in a constant state of fear. I was no longer in control of my body, I had to monitor everything, and nothing was the same. I went from doctor to doctor feeling like a lab rat being prodded with needles with no hope of ever finding the cure. How was this okay?  At this day in age how do we as a society not have a cure for a disease that is so common?  Taking a person, diagnosing them and defining the rest of their life with no cure or hope of finding one?

I refuse to believe that there is no cure. I’m tired of the stigma and suffering associated with the life of a Diabetic. I’m going to be an Endocrinologist and I’m going to change the medical world so that one day my children won’t have to go through what I have been through and continue to go through every day.  I plan on focusing on the evolution of the treatment of diabetes.  I will find a cure and you can help:  The first step I am taking is attending Envision’s Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine at Emory University. During this program I will be immersing myself in the life of a medical student.  This will give me an in depth idea of what my life as a medical student will be like on a day to day basis.  I will be learning about advances made in the medical community, I even get to wear a lab coat!  I have passion, I have focus, I just need the opportunity to make the world a better, healthier place.  Thank you!
